Another CBS Source Backs Down

On September 10, 2004, Dan Rather declared war on the internet. He shouldn't have because it's a battle he is destined to lose. Addressing only a small part of the hundreds of criticisms that web-based critics and assorted typewriter, font, and military experts have lodged against his report, Rather and his CBS colleagues seem to have a masochistic desire for punishment. Our latest updates on the Memogate controversy are posted below. For our 21-point rebuttal to Rather's Sept. 10 salvo, click here.

The unraveling continues. Two of the three people cited on-camera by CBS News as vouching for its conclusion that Jerry Killian--the former Air National Guard commanding officer of George W. Bush--authored incriminating memoranda about the future president have, in subsequent interviews with other media organizations, tempered their support for CBS.

Robert Strong, who served with Killian as an officer tells the New York Times that he does not believe that his former associate used a proportional font typewriter during his time in the Texas guard.

"Mr. Strong said in an interview Friday he was quite sure that he and others used Selectrics in the adjutant general's office. He added that he was not sure the typewriters and devices were also in the 147th Combat Support Squadron at the Ellington base in Houston, home of the 111th squadron.

"'I'm skeptical that Killian was working on that,' Mr. Strong said."

Strong's comments come on the heels of a statement from Marcel Matley, a writing analyst whom CBS presented as having certified its four documents. Interviewed by the Los Angeles Times, however, Matley said that he only vouched for one to the network.

This is the best source for updates on Rathergate, IMHO. Hope that everyone is having a quiet day of remembrance.

Should know better than to attack an AlGore invention.

I do wonder though if the damage is already done. They got the documents out there on a very-watched program. Many will not see or hear beyond that.

On the other hand, this is NOT a story that resonates with very many. I did not find the documents shocking or interesting or anything else, and that was when the assumption was they were "real". It all seemed pretty ordinary, deja vu, etc.

I suspect that Mr. Strong is actually the source of these documents. He has links to Soros, apparently, but also has the historical background to convince CBS that he obtained the documents legitimately.

The thing that you have to come back to when people raise the issue about whether or not the office had Selectrics - anybody using the DEFAULT SETTINGS in Microsoft Word can produce an EXACT to the micrometer replica of the memos in two minutes.

MS Word 2000 isn't pro Bush or anti Kerry.

Phil Dragoo has provided us with the incredible link below that will show us how the forgery was done with MS Word 2000.

Go to the link, let it load, sit back and watch the forgery recreated in about one minute.

the funny thing about this is the free publicity this cite is getting on TV. I, for one, am new and it's because of this story that I learned about this site. So some good things are coming of it. This is like an army here, and we all stick together.

Simple explanation.

Killian went into the future... about 10 years, got a nice new composer typewriter just to make the Bush memo's look 'nicer'! Then he went back to 1972 and moved them through the system.

He probably got a commendation for the great readability of such everyday communications!

Sadly, Rats kept trying to politicize the day...on Fox. Cavuto shut them down time after time. It shows how desperate they truly are. They're heading over the cliff big time.

Mr. Strong said in an interview Friday he was quite sure that he and others used Selectrics in the adjutant general's office.

That would appear to back the other valid NG documents released by the DOD. They are all in monospace font and some have the underlined and vertically aligned superscripted th which was available on some Selectrics.

Also the General that they are CBS is mentioning says that CBS lied to him when they told him they had "handwritten memos", adn that he thinks the memos's are fake.
