RATHER FORGES AHEAD
New York Post ^ | 9/11/04 | DDEBORAH ORIN and VINCENT MORRIS

Posted on 09/11/2004 12:19:33 AM PDT by kattracks

September 11, 2004 -- CBS anchor Dan Rather hung tough last night and insisted there's no "definitive evidence" to refute the authenticity of documents about President Bush's National Guard service — but a growing number of document experts smell a hoax. "If any definitive evidence to the contrary of our story is found, we will report it. So far there is none," Rather insisted.

He produced a man named Marcel Matley as the document vetter.

But Matley is primarily a handwriting expert whose expertise in document evaluation has been challenged by the head of the American Board of Forensic Document Examiners.

Matley spoke only about a signature and initials purported to be those of the late Lt. Col. Jerry Killian — "they are his signatures" — though two of the four memos are unsigned.

Rather also acknowledged CBS has no originals, only photocopies.

Allan Haley — a typeface expert at Agfa Monotype — said anyone who claims to definitively authenticate a photocopy "is either guessing or is a fool."

In another challenge to CBS, Killian's boss, retired Maj. Gen. Bobby W. Hodges, told ABC News that he regards the documents as a computer "fraud," never saw them in the 1970s and didn't validate them for CBS.

A senior CBS official had claimed to the Washington Post that Hodges had validated the documents.

During his national news broadcast, Rather claimed "partisan political operatives" are challenging the memos but omitted the fact that Killian's widow and son dispute them.

Patterico shoots down a promising pro-Kerry Web conspiracy theory--namely that the potential forgery of the CBS Bush guard documents was spotted so quickly on the Web that the person who spotted it ("Buckhead," poster #47 at Free Republic) must have been tipped off in advance.

But of course! It is a well-know fact that FReepers are ignorant, intolerant, evil, knuckle-dragging troglodytes genteically incapable of critical thinking or original thought.

He don't know us vewwy well, do he?

Millions of dollars of computer generated and copied totally bogus counterfeit US currency is passed off on CBS Dan Rather types daily. Mainly because they so much want to believe it is the genuine article, until they try to take it to the bank

I've been out of the loop here for a few days, could you provide a link to the original thread where all this document forgery suspicion began? Thanks!

By the congratulations, even if you were in your pajamas!:)

Mary Mapes, Sy Hersch, Kitty Kelley, etc. are the trash recyclers of the DNC. What we are seeing and hearing now is their October Surprises.

They were ordered by the DNC to get this stuff out before Kerry ends up with negative poll numbers.

As they bring this trash out now, that means sharp freepers like you will be able to shine the spotlight of truth on their lying garbage.

I find it interesting that no other Main Stream Media outlet is trying to run with this story (not the forgery.) They are mostly just watching CBS twist and spin in their own kool-aid. If there was any truth to the memos, CNN would have already picked up the ball and run with it. Can anyone tell me if any of the other MSM outlets are pushing the memo story as if it was real?

Well, Gee, I am only someone who Rather would most likely describe as an uneducated nobody, but even I can see that "story" was a great big old pile of horse chestnuts shoveled out to fool uneducated nobodies. - And, hey, didn't he say something to the effect that it all came from the horse's mouth, when even I can tell it came from the OTHER END of the horse.

Hmmm...What would a signature prove for a copied document? My little brother could scan in a handwriting sample, add it to a document, print it up, then photocopy it several times to get that "Real Authentic 70's Look."

"I find it interesting that no other Main Stream Media outlet is trying to run with this story ..."

My email to the other media outlets.

"How do you guys feel being treated like Dan Rather's bitch by him and CBS?

Rather said anyone who implied the documents might be fakes are just a bunch of right wing partisan hacks with no credibility?

You going to just roll over for him again, are you "real" journalists, or Rather Rather's girliemen?"

Typewriter expert can't duplicate memos using IBM selectric Composer

More IBM composer stuff here No way you can duplicate the memos on a typewriter.

But you can duplicate the memos with microsoft word. ;-)

There is so much information OUT THERE, I decided to put up the OFFICIAL version, rather than let bloggers misconstrue what actually happened.

This is the OFFICIAL timeline:

I put this thread up for the 60 Minutes show.

Live Thread: Ben Barnes and CBS Attempt Another Bush Smear (60 Minutes) at 7:39:18 PM EDT.

At 8:19:00 PM EDT TankerKC posted this:

WE NEED TO SEE THOSE MEMOS AGAIN!

They are not in the style that we used when I came in to the USAF. They looked like the style and format we started using about 12 years ago (1992). Our signature blocks were left justified, now they are rigth of center...like the ones they just showed.

Can we get a copy of those memos?

Every damned "witness" is now dead. I want to see an analysis of those new papers. They are all type written so it should be possible to see if it was written on a Government Issue typewriter of that era. This stinks like week old fish.

Can some of you guys in the later time zones WATCH this interview and get a GOOD LOOK at those docuemtns.....how they were typed, where the signature was.....that kind of thing?

A screen grab would be great!

Who else does screen captures?

That thread continued along for a bit with people commenting on the documents and the show.

Then CBS put the documents up on their web site:

Then Pikamax put up this thread:

Documents Suggest Special Treatment for Bush in Guard

To which Buckhead posted the shot heard round the world:

To: Howlin

Howlin, every single one of these memos to file is in a proportionally spaced font, probably Palatino or Times New Roman.

In 1972 people used typewriters for this sort of thing, and typewriters used monospaced fonts.

The use of proportionally spaced fonts did not come into common use for office memos until the introduction of laser printers, word processing software, and personal computers. They were not widespread until the mid to late 90's. Before then, you needed typesetting equipment, and that wasn't used for personal memos to file. Even the Wang systems that were dominant in the mid 80's used monospaced fonts.

I am saying these documents are forgeries, run through a copier for 15 generations to make them look old.

This should be pursued aggressively.

After all the questions that arose from everybody on the forum, I put this thread up:

THE "New" CBS BUSH DOCUMENTS: Let's do some investigating

As Buckhead said on another thread, many, many Freepers were involved.

thanks for:

Go to the link and just sit back and watch the forgery recreated in about one minute.

Hmm... Palatino Linotype.

I am pretty happy to see that is the font used. I was not completely happy with the Times New Roman matchup. This is clearly much more similar, though with either one the match is uncanny. It is very hard to reconcile this with the technology available in the 70's, especially when the other style, paper, etc factors are taken into account.

I must be one of the "High Class" FReepers.

Usually I wear shorts and a tee shirt... though I have been known to be around the 'puter with quite a bit less than that on occasion.
