The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

Muslim group takes responsibility for 9-11: 'We are so sorry'

This September 11 marks the third unforgettable anniversary of the worst mass murder in American history.

After September 11, many in the Muslim world chose denial and hallucination rather than face up to the sad fact that Muslims perpetrated the 9-11 terrorist acts and that we have an enormous problem with extremism and support for terrorism. Many Muslims, including religious leaders, and "intellectuals" blamed 9-11 on a Jewish conspiracy and went as far as fabricating a tale that 4000 Jews did not show up for work in the World Trade Center on 9-11. Yet others blamed 9-11 on an American right wing conspiracy or the U.S. Government which allegedly wanted an excuse to invade Iraq and "steal" Iraqi oil.

Father of lead terrorist blames Israel, US for 9/11
Taipei Times ^ | Sept. 11 2004 | AP

Posted on 09/11/2004 11:56:05 AM EDT by yonif

Retired lawyer Mohammed al-Amir Atta has had three years to hone the attacking style he's adopted as a defense against what he maintains are spurious charges that his son was the lead Sept. 11 hijacker.

The attacks were a Jewish conspiracy carried out by the Israeli intelligence service, not a plot by Islamic extremists including his son, the elder Atta declared in an interview. Moreover, he added, the US deserved the devastating result because of its anti-Arab policies.

Still, Atta is unwilling to answer direct questions about his son, as became apparent when he's asked about a large photograph on his living room wall showing his son relaxed, so unlike the somber passport photo broadcast around the world after Sept. 11, 2001.

"Sons are dear," is all he will say.

Atta no longer claims his son is still alive, even though he once said his son had called him the day after the attack from an undisclosed destination.

The younger Mohammed Atta was named in FBI and congressional reports as the suicide pilot of the first plane to crash into the World Trade Center and the leader of the 19 Arabs who carried out the Sept. 11 attacks.

In a videotape months after the attacks, al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden himself described the 33-year-old Atta as being "in charge of the group" that struck the US.

Today, the elder Atta and many Arabs place the blame for terrorism on what they say are the conditions that fuel militants' anger, not on the militants themselves.

"No nation has done as much evil in the world as America did, and you do not expect God to punish it?" he asked.

"If a Palestinian flies a plane and strikes the White House and kills [US President George W.] Bush, his wife and his daughters, he will go to heaven," Atta said. "So will any Muslim who defends his faith."

Despite his religious rhetoric, Atta smokes and has decorated his apartment with statues of Buddha, actions few devout Muslims would accept.

Gamal Sultan, a former leader of Egypt's militant Islamic Jihad group and editor of the Cairo-based Islamic weekly al-Manar, said Sept. 11 could be attributed to the grievances built up by US backing for Israel and for despotic Arab regimes.

"Arabs and Muslims are angry at America because of its unflinching support to the Zionist entity and to their own dictators," he said, adding the wars on Afghanistan and Iraq launched after Sept. 11 proved that the US had not absorbed this lesson.

Other Arab opinion-makers, though, have said it is Arabs and Muslims who need to draw lessons from terrorism.

One official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said he discovered in studying the younger Atta's life that when the future terrorist was studying engineering at Cairo University in the late 1980s, he was dating and drinking alcohol, activities devout Muslims avoid. The official said the younger Atta was either brainwashed later by bin Laden, or he pulled off an extraordinary deception.

The elder Atta refused to discuss his son's background except to insist that he had raised him to be a good Muslim.

"Muslims should not accept injustice and half solutions," he said. "Islam said fight those who fight you."

The Globe and Mail's report about the Beslan Hostage taking differs from the official version.

'We'll Make A Bloody Mess Of You'
By Mark MacKinnon
The Globe and Mail
9-11-4

BESLAN, Russia ó Zinaida Urutskoyeva was awake for most of the second night she spent in the gymnasium at Middle School No. 1. It was hard to sleep on the cold floor, packed shoulder to shoulder with other hostages. But she remembers her short dream well.

"I dreamed of having some water before I died," the Grade 3 teacher recalled. It was Friday, Sept. 3, and like most other hostages at Middle School No. 1, she had had nothing to eat or drink since Wednesday, the first day of the deadly siege.

Dozens of people had already been killed ó most of them men who, survivors say, were the most physically fit and may have been considered a threat by the militants who seized the school. The remaining hostages had been reduced to drinking their own urine.

But even after more than 40 hours of terror, the hostages now say, they could feel something different in the air on Friday morning. Their captors' collective mood had changed for the worse. They had become more hostile to the schoolchildren, teachers and parents they held at their mercy. For some reason, they seemed to know the police were going to make a move.

"There will be a storm today. We'll make a bloody mess of you," one of the hostage-takers told those around him in the gym.

The true story of the Beslan hostage-taking is chilling, gory and heart-rending. Survivors and witnesses tell stories of incredible suffering, inhuman cruelty and acts of individual bravery during the three days of hell that shocked the world and traumatized this tightly knit community.

On several important points, their stories contrast sharply with the Kremlin's version of events.

There is no confirmation of Arab involvement, despite the story the Russian government tells ó a tale backed by what is probably pressured testimony from the sole surviving hostage-taker. Nor is there information on the role played by "international terrorists," or about a motive other than forcing Russia to pull its troops out of Chechnya.

Witnesses across a wide spectrum agree that the gunmen spoke Russian, even among themselves, and that most were either Chechens or ethnic Ingush from Ingushetia, a region not far from Beslan. Others may have been Slavic mercenaries.

Even at this late date, the numbers of dead and missing don't add up. One ex-hostage died in hospital yesterday, bringing the official death toll to 360, including 30 hostage-takers. But journalists who were in the morgue in the chaotic first hours after the siege ended say they saw more than 400 bodies.

The local Red Cross says about 200 families are still looking for their kin, but authorities say only 90 bodies are still to be identified.

Not included in the count are 38 body fragments, which may increase the death toll.

Survivors also cast doubt on the Kremlin's assertion that officials were actively seeking a negotiated end to the crisis. They say the hostage-takers frequently expressed frustration at not being able to get authorities to talk to them, and told the hostages they expected the police to storm the school at any minute.

And they say their captors appeared to believe authorities were deliberately misleading the public about the number of hostages, in order to be able to lie about the number of dead if the drama ended badly. Officials said during the siege that there were 354 captives, but there were more than 1,200.

The gunmen were annoyed at seeing the lower figure reported, recalled Margarita Komoyeva, a teacher who was huddled in the gym with her three daughters. "They told us that if the authorities are saying there's just this number of people inside, they will be storming ó get ready for the storm," she said.

------

Even before sunrise on Friday morning, tension had begun to build. The previous day, the militants had released some of the youngest children and their mothers after a visit by the former president of Ingushetia, Ruslan Aushev. But shortly after 1 a.m. they fired a rocket-propelled grenade at government forces surrounding the school, injuring one police officer.

Petrified hostages watched after daybreak as the gunmen began rearranging the explosives they had set up on the first day, placing more of them near the gym windows in apparent anticipation of an attack. They forced small boys to stand in the windows as human shields.

Children who only a day before had been chanting for water sat in silence, sensing the new, more dangerous mood. Survivors recalled trying to inch closer to the exits, hoping to save themselves and their families from whatever came next.

The siege leader was a man referred to by his followers as Colonel.

Zara Medzeva, a 65-year-old grandmother, said she heard him speaking Russian as he used his mobile phone to call someone outside the building, apparently an official negotiator.

The Colonel said: "We've done our part. We've done what was asked of us. What should we do now?" Ms. Medzeva recalled. He apparently didn't like the answer he received, because he slammed his phone down and shouted: "How long should we wait?"

It was barely minutes after 1 p.m. when the bloodbath began. Exactly how it was triggered remains unclear.

What is known is that negotiations suspended early in the morning were back on track. At 12:45 p.m. the hostage-takers agreed to let rescuers from the Ministry of Emergency Situations retrieve about 20 corpses that had been rotting in the sun since being thrown from a second-floor window early in the siege.

As they approached the school, an explosion rocked the gym. Many hostages believe a mine suspended from a wire between two basketball hoops, attached only by tape, came unglued and fell into the crowd below. But no one seems to have seen this happen, and the story appears to be based on the fact that many of the hostages had stared at the hanging explosives for three days, worried they weren't firmly attached.

In other accounts, a mine was set off when someone accidentally touched a foot pedal rigged as a detonator. In another version, floated by the Kremlin, the hostage-takers quarrelled just before the explosion, with one group wanting to escape while others planned to fight to the death.

Whatever the cause, the explosion occurred on the west side of the gym. "When the first bomb exploded, it felt as though everything inside me were on fire," said Alik Sagolov, a 54-year-old physical-education teacher who was sitting perhaps 20 metres away. "I put my hand to my chest ó I thought my chest was injured. Then came the second explosion." A week afterward he popped heart medication as he walked through the ruins of the school. "I just said to myself 'God save me,' and covered my head."

Soslan Beteyev, 12, was stationed by a window as a human shield when the shock wave hit him. "I was just about to step down from the window and there was an explosion, and I fell on some children," he said. "I tried to get up again and there was another explosion. There was panic and everybody tried to get out." He spoke so fast he was almost incomprehensible, his words spilling into each other without pauses, as if he had gone over it a million times in his head.

Soslan climbed out a window and dashed across the courtyard to a store on the edge of the school property. He escaped, along with Ms. Komoyeva's two older daughters, who had been forced to stay behind when their mother was allowed to leave on Thursday with her youngest child.

"They were shooting at our backs," Soslan said robotically. His arms and back were covered in tiny shrapnel wounds, but it was his mind that seemed to have suffered the most damage.

Asked why he returned to the school, he broke into tears. "I don't know," he said. "I thought maybe I could help find some of the missing."

------

The chaos spread outside the gym after the initial explosion. The hostage-takers, apparently believing it was the beginning of a police effort to storm the building, began firing on the emergency workers and then on hostages trying to escape.

Security forces outside had ruled out using force to free the hostages, and had no set plan for seizing the building. But with the shooting, they decided they had no choice but to move in.

"When they started killing civilians, there were no other options," said Vitaly, an Interior Ministry officer who was crouching behind a tree about 50 metres from the gym door when the order came. The operation, he said, was made up as it went along. "It was a total mess."

After the second explosion, the remaining militants moved around the smoke-filled gymnasium looking for survivors. They rounded up everyone moving and took them down the hall to the school cafeteria, planning to make a final stand.

Mr. Sagolov was one of several hostages who fled upstairs in the confusion and hid behind a curtain on the stage of the assembly hall. They were discovered and also taken to the cafeteria.

"The terrorists were shouting 'hurry up ó walk quickly or we will kill you,'." said Ruslan Margiyev, a short-haired 12-year-year-old, who by this point was bleeding from a shrapnel wound to his hand. "But we were afraid to step on the corpses."

Bullets were pouring into the cafeteria from outside, he said. He took cover behind an oven, but the hostage-takers ordered the children toward the window. "They said, 'if you do not wave a cloth in the window, we will kill all of you.'."

One woman got up on her knees and was hit in the chest by two bullets fired from outside. Eight-year-old Zaur Bitsiyev, whom Ruslan recognized, was killed at the same time ó shot in the back by someone in the cafeteria.

A Russian spetznaz, or special-forces officer, stepped through the window and told Ruslan to run. The officer was shot and killed by a Chechen who had been hiding in the kitchen, his body falling on top of the boy. Ruslan said he hid under the body until the shooting ended, protected by the soldier's bulletproof vest.

Vitaly, the Interior Ministry officer, was among the first of the troops to reach the blackened shell of the gym. "I saw a sea of blood and corpses ó adults and children ó all over the gymnasium," he said, his husky voice dropping low. "Everything was burned. It was impossible to recognize anything."

------

Mr. Aushev, the former Ingushetia president, said that even after the initial explosion, negotiations might still have worked if it hadn't been for well-armed local citizens ó many of them with family inside the building ó who decided to take matters into their own hands.

Shortly after the first bomb went off, he spoke by telephone with the hostage-takers. He later told the Novaya Gazeta newspaper they were convinced the explosion was the beginning of a police operation to storm the building, but were willing to stop shooting if the Russian forces outside did the same.

"They said, 'We have stopped shooting, you are shooting,'." he said. "We gave the command to stop the shooting. But a stupid 'third force' intervened ........Some militia with assault rifles decided to free the hostages themselves, and they opened fire at that school."

Kazbek Torchinov, a former deputy in the local parliament, said that version of events fits with what he saw from the window of his home opposite the school. "Armed civilians opened fire first. I called the operations centre and said 'What the hell are you doing?'."

None of the survivors saw Arabs for sure during the siege. Twelve-year-old Soslan said one man "might have been an Arab," but the rest were Chechens and Ingush and possibly some Russians and Ossetians.

"They had Chechen and Ingush accents," Ms. Komoyeva recalled. "By appearance they were Chechens, but when Aushev came, we realized some were Ingush."

Beyond ending the war between Russian troops and separatist forces in Chechnya, the only demand the hostage-takers made was for the release of 24 Chechen and Ingush fighters detained after a raid on Nazran, capital of Ingushetia, in June.

The Kremlin's claim that 10 of the hostages were Arabs was repeated by President Vladimir Putin. But Prosecutor-General Vladimir Ustinov contradicted his bosses, saying no Arabs were among the corpses identified. Those whose names are known are Chechens and Ingush, apparently members of a unit led by notorious warlord Shamil Basayev ó a thorn in Russia's side for 10 years.

Many in the region known as North Ossetia, where Beslan is located, are talking about taking revenge against the neighbouring Ingush as soon as the 40-day Orthodox Christian period of mourning is over. The Caucasus is often compared to the Balkans, Ossetians and Ingush are historical rivals, and fear is high that the Chechen war is about to be regionalized.

But although Ms. Medzeva, the grandmother, would like to see the guilty punished, she is even more anxious to avoid a further wave of killing.

"I wish I was dead and the small people were alive," she said through tears in the burnt-out gym, as a crowd of people listened, silent with sorrow. "But enough war. Enough bloodshed.

"I will even come to peace with the man who held a gun to my head if it means this will not happen again."

On one past thread (can't remember because - well, because) I posted a list of good nutrition survival foods because most emergency lists are just for a few days or a week or two. I mean, how much canned goods and nutrition bars can you store? So I made a list of basic foods for a more long term situation, and promised recipes. Haven't done the recipe thing. Some people wanted it posted on the alternative TM site rather than on this one. I'll try to organize the recipes, post them on the alternitive site, and put a link on this one.

Now I'll try to remember to do it. ;-)

I have received this from a Freeper who has some concerns and knows TM'rs are the best group to get knowledge from.
The article is from www.StrategyPage.com (no link) and the query for all of you is anyone familiar with this subject matter?

Also, another Freeper has asked me, about Texas. Has anyone seen reports of multiple bomb threats to the point they are ignored, either in Texas or around the US? Thanks for any input!

ELECTRONIC BATTLEFIELD: Homeland Defense Electronic Warfare Mysteries

September 10, 2004: Several electronic warfare efforts are underway within the United States to increase protection from terrorist attack. Evidence is starting to show up. For example, GPS "anomalies" (unpredictable GPS performance) have been documented by airline pilots and electronics experts near U.S. nuclear facilities. Commercial airline pilots landing at one airport near a nuclear facility have reported these anomalies during final approaches. In other studies, experts have documented large errors in civilian GPS receivers used within a quarter mile of a nuclear facility. Repeatedly driving around the plant and monitoring different models of commercial receivers, GPS-indicated speeds were consistently twice that of the car's actual speed, with GPS readouts of terrain elevation registering at sea level, even through the facility was several thousand feet above sea level.

Speculation is that gross errors are being introduced by transmitting low-power "corrections" close to the facility, effectively spoofing (deceiving) of any sort of guided weapon dependant upon GPS signals for targeting. Neither the National Nuclear Security Administration, or the Homeland Security Department will comment. Ironically, Los Alamos National Laboratory published a paper in 2003 on how to implement spoofing countermeasures for civilian GPS devices.

Meanwhile, in Waldorf Maryland, 20 minutes south of Andrews Air Force Base in Washington D.C., the little black frobs that unlock car doors – keyless entry remote control – have mysteriously stopped working on at least five occasions in the past year. People have had to result to old-fashioned metal keys, although some systems require the remote signal to start the engine as a theft-preventive measure. These devices operate at frequencies of 302 and 315 megahertz, bands primarily licensed for use by the military and the federal government. Since the commercial devices don't have dedicated access to the frequency, they must accept interference from other devices. The affected drivers aren't happy. AT&T has made cryptic statements that the interference is coming from its 300 foot microwave tower in town, via some kind of "government" activity, but is saying little else. It is not clear if the interference is a byproduct of communications or intentional jamming as a measure against remotely triggered bombs that would use keyless entry devices as triggers.

Thanks Donna, I messed it up a bit ;( No Kinetic help!

I got this from AngelSpeake today, wanted to share it with those who would understand - Father Mychal F. Judge was a Franciscan Friar who died on 9-11-2001 while giving last rites to a fallen fireman. His message to the world about what happened that day from his point of view was given to us on the first anniversary of the catastrophe. If you would like to read Fr. Mychal’s message, go to www.angelspeake.com and click on The Angels Speake. His insight and loving perspective is one you won’t want to miss.

God Bless You All,
Trudy & Barbara:

Mychal F. Judge -- d. 2001

Dear Father Mychal, What really happened that horrible day, September 11, 2001, from your point of view?

My dear ladies,
It was the most wonderful day you can imagine. Love connected us all. Love came down from the heavens and the souls of the dearly departed rose from their bodies to meet that love and to join hands. In a special instant everyone connected in a way that has never happened before.

Everything about that day was fitting and proper. It was like heaven and earth came together in one moment and all the world was united in care, concern, and love. The ones leaving and the angels coming in their magnificent glory, and prayers uniting them with those who were left, was beyond description. Never in the history of the world has there ever been a more magnificent event.

Here is what happened as it happened.

You will notice that the ones who were able to get through on their cell phones all called people they loved! Every one of them had accepted they were going to die, but their first thought was not of fear for themselves, but to reach out to say goodbye and I love you. By that action alone, you know that there was peace in their hearts just before they died because they were in a state of love.

There was no anger. There was actually a great deal of camaraderie. As people jumped from the towers they often took that first step by holding hands with a friend or co-worker. They offered themselves up to the unknown and leaped to their fate. And I want each and every one of you to know this, for it the most important thing I can tell you. As each person took their first step into the unknown, their soul simultaneously left their body. They did not know the agony of the fall, or the pain of impact. They were with God and His angels from that first step.

As that is true, so is it true that there was no pain for any of the victims. Each one, as a willing sacrifice to God, gave his or her pain to help of all survivors. What a wonderful gift! Much was done on a soul level that is beyond human understanding, but the rest was in God’s hands and God, in his mercy, took each soul into his lap and praised it for the sacrifice it made for the good of mankind.

Yes, the good of mankind. Did you notice how each person, struck down in his prime, was a happy person who had much love in his or her life? Did you notice that they were successful, busy, healthy, and had families to mourn them? Did you notice that they were accompanied by care and concern from all over the world? And did you notice that not just Americans were involved in the sacrifice, but 67 other countries? This was not an American event, this was a world event. The mere fact that it happened in the World Trade Center assured that truth and as others write the history books, the real meaning of that will become more apparent. For the fall of the World Trade Center, did not just take lives, it began a whole new era of understanding for every country in the world. It may not be apparent today, but it certainly will be seen as such in later years.

Did you notice that all types of people were drawn to what became known as Ground Zero. Even though quick means of transportation—airplanes—were unavailable, it did not stop those who were called to help. Thousands of people, within hours of the event, got in their cars, jumped on buses, or even walked to the site to begin to help.

Television did not begin to show what happened afterward. People came from all over New York City to help. They brought their hands to help the survivors, and then ended up helping the store owners and people who were made homeless in the area of the event. People cooked who had never cooked. People of means swept dust. Beds were needed, children were helped, and mourners were comforted.

People came from all over the world to help. Canadians and Nova Scotians came over the borders in spite of security. Newfoundlanders came by boat, as well as many from our eastern shore. Today it reminds me of the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind, where the characters were drawn to Devil’s Tower and they didn’t know why. They just had to go. Their hearts led them, not their minds.

I am ahead of myself. I want to tell you about the moments of impact because it was the best time of all. Trust me on this. I was down below giving Last Rites to one of my fireman friends, when I passed over. Now, because I am no longer limited by barriers of time or space, can relive the moment of impact myself. It does not matter if the impact was at the Pentagon, the World Trade Center, or a field in Pennsylvania, it all happened the same way.

Just before impact, the soul left our bodes. Like the connection left the phones, so did our soul leave our body. We were immediately cut off from life in a totally fearless and painless way. As our soul left, there was a moment when our focus was shifted to angels, saints, and loved ones who had gathered to help us cross. There were mothers, fathers, grandparents, children, and friends who immediately surrounded us in love and to welcome us into our new awareness. Every one of us had people there to welcome us. Every soul! I was briefly surprised that there were so many and that some of the ones I was happiest to see were ones I did not know in this life. They were dear ones who did not choose to be born at this time, and thus were helping me from that side. That was especially wonderful when I connected with them. It was the grandest reunion you can imagine!

My message for those of you who were left with the grief, financial decisions, explanations, and fears, is to be happy for us. And even though you know that, and want us to be happy, we understand that because you cannot see us, you feel abandoned and alone. You are not. We are just a breath away from you. Ask for us to come to you when times are difficult. Just say, “Honey, are you there? I love you and miss you and need your comfort right now.” We will be there even before you draw in your breath to say the first word! If you don’t think you feel us now, you will. Just ask us to come and believe we will. For we do. Often it will be just a shiver up your arm or a tingle on your head or hair. If you hear a song that you like or see something you know would have pleased us, we are there. If you even think of us, it is us giving you the memory.

Now this following advice is from us all. So many of you are not making decisions because you don’t know what we would want. Just make your decisions on what YOU want to do. If you need to sell cars or property, sell them! If you need to move, do it. If you want to get married again, by all means do it! Many times we are the ones who are introducing you to your new opportunity or love. We are still helping you find happiness and love even though we are not physically present. We will not be upset or mad. Anger and fear just aren’t part of our understanding any more. We just love you and respect you and are helping you.

I want to thank Barbara and Trudy for writing this book. The fact that two people within one hour suggested me as a possible source of information for them, certainly says something for our eagerness to communicate with those who are still on earth, in the fray so to speak.

Keep praying. Prayers are needed for the world, for us on this side, and for those who still remain to do God’s work on your side.

May you live in the peace we are resting in.
Dominus Vobiscum
Mike

Mychal’s Prayer

Dear God,
Lord, take me where You want me to go;
Let me meet who You want me to meet;
Tell me what You want me to say, and
Keep me out of Your way.
Amen

I thank you for posting this M'Dear!

After September 11, many in the Muslim world chose denial and hallucination rather than face up to the sad fact that Muslims perpetrated the 9-11 terrorist acts and that we have an enormous problem with extremism and support for terrorism.

This is a Must Read ALL!
