The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

Muslim group takes responsibility for 9-11: 'We are so sorry'

This September 11 marks the third unforgettable anniversary of the worst mass murder in American history.

After September 11, many in the Muslim world chose denial and hallucination rather than face up to the sad fact that Muslims perpetrated the 9-11 terrorist acts and that we have an enormous problem with extremism and support for terrorism. Many Muslims, including religious leaders, and "intellectuals" blamed 9-11 on a Jewish conspiracy and went as far as fabricating a tale that 4000 Jews did not show up for work in the World Trade Center on 9-11. Yet others blamed 9-11 on an American right wing conspiracy or the U.S. Government which allegedly wanted an excuse to invade Iraq and "steal" Iraqi oil.

Khamenei urges Muslim union against U.S.

Tehran, Iran, Sep. 13 (UPI) -- Iran's spiritual guide Ayatollah Ali Khamenei urged Muslim countries Monday to join hands and unite against what he called the arrogant United States.

The Iranian News Agency quoted Khamenei as telling senior government officials that "the Islamic world should get together and unite its stance to confront U.S. arrogance."

He accused Washington of seeking to dominate the Islamic world under the pretext of fighting terrorism and spreading democracy and freedom "at a time it is committing massacres against the peoples of Iraq, Afghanistan and the Palestinians."

He said "the hatred of the Muslim world against the U.S." should be exploited in order to spread awareness among Muslim peoples about the need to confront American hegemony.

"The logic of arrogant states like the U.S. is based on terrorism and aggression and not on dialogue and justice... America which personifies evil is only seeking hegemony over the Muslim world and the Middle East in particular," Khamenei said.

He blasted Muslim countries for staying idle and silent over what he called "Washington's daily crimes" against Muslim peoples.

7 horses have died of encephalitis, and 2 have been confirmed as having Eastern equine encephalitis, state Agriculture Commissioner Bob Odom said. He said that one was from Calcasieu Parish and the others "from the swampy areas in the northern part of DeSoto Parish near Stonewall."

"We are asking all horse owners to make sure their animals have up-to-date vaccinations and to consult a veterinarian if their horses are displaying any signs," Odom said.

A comment on bird die-off in Greece

The mass deaths of waterfowl described in ProMED's posting of Fri, 10 Sep 2004, "Waterfowl die-off - Greece (Lake Koronia)" is most probably an outbreak of avian botulism. Favorable conditions for bird botulism are the hot summer months combined with low precipitation and presence of sarcophagous flies (_Lucilia_ etc.). The disease is
caused by the toxin produced by _Clostridium botulinum_ type C, less often type E (in fish-eating birds like gulls), and it presents no risk to humans.

Hundreds of dead croaker, that have washed up on the shore in Hampton, Virginia this week [2nd week of September 2004], are probably the latest victims of a mysterious disease that has killed millions of the fish along the Atlantic Coast, from Florida to New Jersey. A marine scientist says that he is almost certain that a bacterial infection is to blame for the huge number of dead fish.

The virus pathogen -- known as _Barramundi nodavirus_ -- was detected at a commercial breeding center. The virus affects larval and juvenile fish, mainly via the brain and central nervous system.

An outbreak of gastrointestinal disease on board a cruise ship sailing around Britain is currently being investigated [1]. The MV Mona Lisa left Bremerhaven, northern Germany, on 28 Aug 2004 carrying 940 people (330 crew and 610 passengers). Most of the passengers were German.

Following a welcome dinner that day, 86 people developed
gastrointestinal illness over the following 4 days (29 Aug: 1 case; 30 Aug: 25 cases; 31 Aug: 45 cases; 1 Sep: 15 cases). The attack rates among passengers and crew are reported to be similar, although dates of onset among crew members were mostly 1 day later than among passengers.
