Arrest Made in Cisco Source Code Theft
from PCWorld Cybercrime on Tuesday, September 21, 2004
Suspect accused of stealing and distributing source code over the Internet.
Police in the U.K. have arrested a man in connection with the theft of source code from networking equipment maker Cisco Systems in May, a Scotland Yard spokesperson confirms.
The Metropolitan Police Computer Crime Unit searched residences in Manchester, England, and Derbyshire, England, on September 3, confiscated computer equipment, and arrested a 20-year-old man suspected of committing "hacking offenses" under that country's Computer Misuse Act of 1990. While authorities could not discuss the specifics of the case, the arrest was linked to the Cisco source code, according to Julie Prinsep, a Yard spokesperson.
The suspect has since been released on bail and is scheduled to appear before authorities at a London police station again in November, Prinsep says. Computer equipment seized in the searches is being forensically examined, she says.
In an e-mail statement, a Cisco spokesperson says the company is encouraged that an arrest was made in the case.
"As we have previously reported, we are continuing to cooperate with law enforcement agencies on this matter . . . . We view the arrest as what will likely be one of many steps in this matter. We will take every measure to protect our intellectual property," the spokesperson says.
Major Breakthrough The arrest marks a major breakthrough in the case, which involves the posting of more than 800MB of source code from Cisco's Internetwork Operating System to a Russian Web site in May.
IOS is a proprietary operating system that runs on much of the networking hardware that Cisco makes.
Malicious hackers made off with code for version 12.3 of IOS after the thief compromised a Sun Microsystems server on Cisco's network, then briefly posted a link to the source code files on a file server belonging to the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands, according to Alexander Antipov, a security expert at Positive Technologies, a security consulting company in Moscow.
Antipov says he downloaded more than 15MB of the stolen code after an individual using the online name "Franz" briefly posted a link to a 3MB compressed version of the files in a private Internet Relay Chat forum in May.
The link provided was only available for approximately ten minutes and pointed to a file on an FTP server, which belongs to the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands. That server is open to the public for hosting files smaller than 5MB, according to the University's Web page.
Antipov subsequently posted some of that code on a Russian security Web site to call attention to the reported theft, but denied knowing Franz. (snipped)

US and Israel Gunning for Syria
Hassan Tahsin
The objectives pursued by the UN Security Council seem to have changed. Instead of working to solve international conflicts through peaceful means and safeguard world peace and security, the Council is now threatening UN member countries with invasion, occupation or at least sanctions. It is all done in compliance with orders from the big powers who are only interested in pursuing their own interests.
snip
It must however be stressed that America will find in Syria a situation totally different from that in Iraq. Saddam Hussein was hated in the Arab world, but BASHAR enjoys the trust and support of his people and those in the region. President Bush and his neocon mafia may lie to the American people, but after tasting the ferociousness of Iraqi resistance, they know that they cant afford another victory of the same type. Attacking Syria means a war in the Middle East that would spare no one America and Israel including.
These facts make it imperative that, no matter how complicated the problems are, solutions should be sought through peaceful means.

Japan may extend its Iraq deployment
http://www.taipeitimes.com/News/world/archives/2004/09/22/2003203868
Japan may extend its deployment of troops in southern Iraq if the security situation in the country does not change, a top government official said yesterday.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Hiroyuki Hosoda said, however, that the government has made no final decision yet.
"If the situation remains the way it is now, I think it's necessary for Japan to continue to get actively involved," said Hosoda. When asked if an extension was possible, Hosoda said, "Yes."
Some 500 Japanese troops on a non-combat, humanitarian mission in the Iraqi city of Samawah are slated to come home in December this year. Another 500 are based in neighboring Gulf states providing support.
The Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported yesterday that the Cabinet was expected to approve an extension of about one year before December, and that foreign ministry and defense officials have already notified Washington.
A Defense Agency spokeswoman declined to comment on the report.
The mission has faced strong opposition at home, where many fear the troops could get drawn into fighting in violation of Japan's pacifist constitution.
Critics have also charged that Japan's high-profile support of the US makes it an increasingly likely target of terrorism.
Hosoda said the government would keep a close watch on the terrorism problem and changes involving the new government in Iraq in making its final decision.
"We will to decide after evaluating the overall situation, including Iraq's reconstruction and security situation," he said.
NHK public broadcaster reported that Iraqi Prime Minister Ayad Allawi asked Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi to keep Japanese troops in Iraq, when the two leaders met in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session.
Koizumi, emphasizing the need for stability in Iraq, responded that Japan intended to continue doing its utmost for the country's reconstruction, NHK said.

Saudi Arabia: Who Are the Islamists?
http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/fromthefield/109578401397.htm
Amman/Riyadh/Brussels, 21 September 2004: Violent attacks in Saudi Arabia have unintentionally promoted a sense of national unity that offers the regime a unique opportunity for reform. The authorities must drive a wedge between violent and non-violent Islamists, encouraging the latter as part of a broader coalition.
Saudi Arabia Backgrounder: Who Are the Islamists?,* the latest report from the International Crisis Group, is the first in-depth look at Islamists in that country since the resurgence of violence. Based on dozens of interviews inside the Kingdom, it examines the genealogy of the various Islamist groupings and explains how the regime must repair its legitimacy if it is to keep violent opposition on the sidelines.
"Islamism in contemporary Saudi Arabia has two faces", says Robert Malley, Director of the Middle East and North Africa Program at ICG. "There's a militant one bent on destabilising the Kingdom and a moderate one intent on promoting political, social and religious reform. While the former has grabbed most headlines, the latter holds the greater potential for reshaping the country."
Through their tactics, the militants have largely marginalised themselves, but anti-regime feelings still run high. Given the closed, arbitrary political system, the privileged status of the royal family, widespread financial corruption and waste, violent militants undoubtedly retain the ability to attract new supporters.
The regime has tended to view the loose centrist coalition of progressive Sunni Islamists, nationalists, liberals and Shiites as a political threat, but it is precisely through fostering this broad coalition that the regime can start to regain its legitimacy and stabilise the country. It can no longer afford to silence the one movement with the potential to bridge the gap between Western-orientated and liberal elements on the one hand and Islamists and religious conservatives on the other.
Saudi Arabia is at a critical stage in both its struggle against terrorism and its on-again, off-again efforts at reform, and Islamism is at the heart of both. The success or failure of the moderate Islamists in providing social, religious and political responses to the country's predicament will determine the ultimate fate of their radical rivals.
CIA Says Zarqawi Was Speaker in Beheading Tape
http://www.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?type=topNews&storyID=6295289
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Abu Musab al Zarqawi was "intimately involved" in the killing of American hostage Eugene Armstrong, a U.S. intelligence official said on Tuesday after the CIA determined that the al Qaeda ally was the speaker on the videotape of the beheading.
"There is high confidence that the voice is indeed of Abu Musab al Zarqawi," a CIA official said on condition of anonymity after the spy agency conducted a technical analysis of the tape.
The video of the killing was posted on the Internet by Zarqawi's Tawhid and Jihad group, and showed a masked man who read a statement, handed the script to another person, then pulled out a knife and put it to the neck of the hostage.
Then there is a cut in the film as the camera zooms in to show a close-up of hands as the hostage is decapitated, which makes it difficult to determine with absolute certainty whether Zarqawi is still the one wielding the knife.
"He (Zarqawi) was obviously intimately involved in the murder," a U.S. intelligence official said on condition of anonymity.
The speaker on the video rails against President Bush -- "Oh, you Christian dog Bush, stop your arrogance."
The statement also says: "The mujahideen will give America a taste of the degradation you have inflicted on the Iraqi people."
The group said it would kill another hostage if the United States did not release women being held in prisons in Iraq.
The U.S. military says no women are being held in the two prisons specified but that two are in U.S. custody and are accused of working on ousted Iraqi President Saddam Hussein's weapons program.
Bush, speaking in New York, said: "Yesterday, an American citizen was beheaded. We express our heartfelt condolences. We send our prayers to the Armstrong family."
"We also stand in solidarity with the American that is now being held captive. We send our prayers to his wife," he said. "These killers want to shake our will. They want to determine the fate of the Iraqi people."

"AND DON'T COME BACK NOW, Y'HEAR?"
By Michelle Malkin · September 22, 2004 01:13 AM
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "So, Muslim convert Yusuf Islam (a.k.a. Cat Stevens) was denied entry to America and the world thinks a human rights atrocity has been committed. Boo-hoo. As I've said many times before, there is no right to enter this country. It is a privilege.
The entitlement goons at the Council on American-Islamic Relations, of course, think otherwise and have scheduled a press conference later this morning to protest Stevens' exclusion:
(WASHINGTON, D.C., 9/21/04) - On Wednesday, September 22, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) will hold a noon news conference in Washington, D.C., in reaction to today's exclusion from the United States of Yusuf Islam, an internationally-known Muslim activist and educator."
