Swift boat vets group sees rise in donations (Contributors pour $6.7 million into its coffers)

....................The financial report "proves without a doubt that we have received genuine grass-roots support for our message and, more importantly, touched off a national debate concerning John Kerry's character and leadership ability as a potential commander in chief," said Adm. Roy Hoffmann, founder of Swift Boat Veterans for Truth.

In television commercials, the accuracy of which has been undermined in newspaper articles and disputed by the Kerry campaign, the swift boat group has challenged Kerry's service in Vietnam and the medals he received there.

The swift boat anti-Kerry campaign began just over a month ago with a relatively modest $500,000 television buy.

Over the past six weeks, the swift boat veterans raised the $6.7 million from what they said were more than 53,000 donors. In a news release, the group contended its purpose is to tell "the truth about John Kerry's military service in Vietnam and his disloyalty to his fellow veterans after he returned from his brief tour of duty."

Wait...does that mean I've questioned Frenchie's patriotism? Oh no! Please forgive me John, we know your patriotism is unquestionable. After all we have your senate voting record as a testament. From the moment he arrived in Washington, Kerry promised that "issues of war and peace" would remain his passion. And, from the start, this meant that he would criticize Ronald Reagan's war against communism, especially when it was fought through proxies in the jungles of Central America. In 1985, he traveled to Nicaragua to meet with the Sandanista government, telling The Washington Post, "I see an enormous haughtiness in the United States trying to tell [the Sandinistas] what to do." Soon after his return, he pressured Congress into investigating the administration's illegal funding of the Contra rebels, opening a trail that culminated in the exposure of the arms-for-hostages deal with Iran. And, a few years later, in the late '80s, he repeated this success, launching an investigation that revealed that another of the administration's favorite anti-communists, the Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega, had been deeply enmeshed in drug-trafficking. There is now at least one donor for every GI we lost in Vietnam.

Curious development ... I sent two checks on August 25, one to the RNC for an amount in excess of $100 ... this went to a Washington address. The second check, for a lesser amount, to the Swift Boat Vets with a PO Box address in northern VA. Both checks were processed thru Wachovia NA SVC Philadelphia, PA on August 25 within a few hours of one another ... the processing numbers are almost sequential. Anyone care to comment?
