A handwriting expert says the two signatures on purported Texas National Guard memos aired by CBS News this week are not those of President Bush's squadron commander, as asserted by "60 Minutes."
Until now, press scrutiny of the memos supposedly written by the late Lt. Col. Jerry B. Killian focused on the finding that the documents were, in the opinion of experts, produced by computers not yet in use in the early 1970s.
Eugene P. Hussey, a certified forensic document examiner in Washington state, said yesterday there is another flaw in the CBS memos. Mr. Hussey studied the known signatures of Col. Killian on Air Force documents, and two signatures on documents dated 1972 and 1973 that aired on "60 Minutes" Wednesday night.
"It is my limited opinion that Killian did not sign those documents," Mr. Hussey told The Washington Times. He said he uses the phrase "limited opinion" because he does not have the original documents. He, like other experts interviewed by the press, relied on copies of originals first obtained by CBS. The White House then distributed copies of the memos in what is said was the interest of full disclosure.

The Times provided Mr. Hussey with copies of the CBS documents, which he dubbed Q-1-3, and records known to have been signed by Col. Killian, (K-1-3).
"It is my opinion based on the examination of the Q-1 through Q-3 and K-1 through K-3, that Jerry B. Killian probably did not sign his name to Q-1 and his initial to Q-3," Mr. Hussey said in a signed letter to The Times. "As to the authenticity of the CBS documents, that is Q-1 through Q-3, [they] appear to be product of a computer, rather than a typewriter."

I found the info finally on the OETR:
Later in the newscast, Campenni sat down with anchor Jim Angle. Campenni brought up the August 18, 1973 "CYA" memo (online: http://www.cbsnews.com/htdocs/pdf/BushGuardaugust18.pdf ), which referred to how "Staudt has obviously pressured Hodges" and how "Staudt is pushing to sugar coat it." Campenni pointed out that General "Buck" Staudt had retired in 1972, so it would not be logical that Staudt would any longer be in Killian's line of command.
Campenni added, citing the same memo: "The other issue on that particular letter, there's another comment further down, OETD,' that's the, I presume, OETR.' That's referring to the Officer Efficiency Report...But the term of art was OER. Now it's OES. OETR,' I went and looked in the Air Force glossary for that period, that's Officer Education Training Repositories -- totally unrelated to that. So I don't know why someone who would be doing these things all the time would put the wrong acronym in there for that."

IT WOULD BE A BLAST TO SEE THE FBI, LOCKDOWN CBS COPY MACHINES AND/OR FAXES AS ALL LEAVE A TRAIL (MARKING) OF SOME SORT ON A COPIED DOCUMENT.
We'll let plaintiffs' attorneys determine that, and utilize the discovery process.
She is lying on the bottom with an imploded hull and a 20 ft diameter hole blown from the inside out.
Is it possible that the good Col. knows enough military jargon to whip up some memoranda?
Also, everyone should keep this in mind. Background: I own a small company... Two weeks ago I got a call from the bank about 2 guys who were trying to cash checks that I had written. The signature card matched, but one of the guys Drivers liscense was expired. They theifs actually got a copy of one of my checks, and counterfitted the check. Made up a different looking check with the correct bank accnt# and bank routing#. They had scanned in my EXACT SIGNATURE, and then had my signature scanned in on the counterfitted checks. Needless to say I had the banks call the cops and had them arrested on the spot.
That said, it COULD actually be his signature on the forged documents.
Im worried about the DU crowd..with the automatic weapons ban being lifted some of them are in danger of going postal.I think we're still better armed than them....LOL
One of the funniest thing I ever read was on DU. Right after Bush got elected, a few of the "Children In Black" anarchist types were talking about starting some sort of uprising. One woman posted that she didn't think that was a really good idea. She observed that her area was full of "Freepers" and they all had guns, and she didn't have anything more lethal than the squirt bottle she used for feline discipline.

They are official in the sense that an officer is writing about himself and his duties as an officer, and he is writing it to "CYA" in case something he or someone else has done is interpreted in a bad light. They are "quasi" in the sense that these memos are usually personal records that has not been filed through official channels and that have not been sent to anyone. The officer personally maintains them, and thus they are not "official government documents."
Based only on my personal experience (which I would not dare generalize) I wrote a little more on this subject here:

I went to your linked post, and you seem to know your stuff......what is your opinion of what action SHOULD be taken, if the memos CBS put forth as authentic are indeed forgeries?
However, if the document itself is a forgery, than does it qualify as a "military document"?
Thanks.
I would guess that the only recourse would be for someone to file suit in the civil courts -- either President Bush would have to file for some sort of libel (which he of course won't do), or in a more likely course of action, Killian's family could sue on similar grounds. I'm sure a creative lawyer would have no problem filing suit.
The next question would be who to file suit against. The media is pretty protected from even the worst sorts of libel, because the Killian family would have to prove that CBS knowingly printed false information AND with intent to harm. Tough to prove. And unless it can be shown who forged the documents (again, this is going to be very hard to pin down), those doing the forgery will get away from this.
I'm afraid that the only useful thing to be done would seem to be win this one politically, in the court of public opinion. The truth of the matter is that even if all of this were proven to be true about Bush, I can't imagine it actually hurting him. It seems to me that the longer the emphasis stays on what happened in the early 70s, the more it hurts Kerry, since polls show that his only hope is to convince people that the economy is the #1 issue and that he is the man to turn it around, and since it is he, and not Bush, who made what happened during Vietnam the centerpiece of his campaign.
This is why I continue to think that the ultimate source of this forgery is in the Clinton camp, with an intent to hurt Bush, but still to make sure that he, and not Kerry, wins. The Clintons' worst nightmare is Kerry actually winning...
As in "DUers are SofaKing STUPID!!!"?
If Kerry were smart....
Well, never mind.
One of those documents contains a purported order for Bush to report for an examination. That would be an official military document.
If, however, that document is also forged, then you are indeed correct that if the forger could be identified, criminal charges could indeed be brought on the basis of that order for a physical.
We're not only talking Fraud, we're talking about TAMPERING WITH A FEDERAL ELECTION! Thirty years ago Dan Rather was hounding President Nixon about the Watergate cover up. The point was that the cover up was worse than the third rate crime. Now that evidence is mounting against seeBS, Dan is digging himself into a deeper hole. What goes around...comes around.
The order is a fake as well. All the CBS documents are fakes. There are two more circulated at USA Today that are fakes.
This is a crime and needs to be investigated.
Suspect there is more and worse to come as the clock ticks.
I would certainly hope by now that 'someone has gotten involved' at the WH.
Can't have a 'genuine' signature on bogus documents either. . .so let us hope, by now. . .if only quietly. . .the WH is ready to defend the truth!
