We began the forgery scandal assuming CBS would be very embarrassed by their gross journalistic faux pas. This false assumption assumed CBS cares about news integrity and ignores the reality that CBS is a willing participant in this fraud on the American people.
The very nature of the CBS program - the breathless combo of uncritical treatment of Barnes and these documents- demonstrate that CBS was striking a well timed dagger at the President. CBS knew exactlty what the reaction would be and they and the DNC/ Kerry Campaign are prepared.
CBS knows that "if you strike at the king, you must kill him." They knew what they were getting into and they intend to win. They are going to defend those documents, and the general proposition that GWB is and was a lying coward. They are going to use all the DNC talking points at their disposal. that is the World CBS moves in, not the World of journalistic integrity.
Now they intend to confuse the issue. "Maybe" the documents are real they will say, and "maybe" it doesn't matter. They can convince and confuse close to half the electorate with this.
They care nothing about their reputation. The longer they keep the nation focused on this story, it is not focused on Kerry. It is focused on a story that supposedly is negative for President Bush. This is all designed to be an exact counterpoint to the SwiftVets. They are being swept off the cable news and replaced with talk of GWB's guard service.
And this aggressive attack corresponds EXACTLY with the Clinton takeover of the Kerry campaign.
The White House is right about one thing - this is only the beginning. You already have Kerry telling black churchgoers that Bush is reinstating segregation. Straight from the Clinton playbook.
They are going to fight this hard, and the White House better get the attention back on Kerry. This story will only be useful IF the GOP decides to wrap forged military records around John Kerry's neck. Sitting on the sidelines will turn this story over to the likes of Carville and Rather.
What's wrong with that. Bush did nothing wrong thus has no reason to fear a deposition...
I don't think it will hurt the President because it's all been out there before, except this time there is more suspicion on the docs.
BUT, I do think it might have been a move to distract from the anniverary of 9/11.
Fox had great coverage on the docs, including the fact that the implication that Bush dodged the physical because of drugs is bogus. Drug testing was not included as part of a physical until the 1980's
Depose as in remove from power.
What good would it do to depose a person who was never copied on the memo, in fact CBS calls these "personal memos" placed in Killian's "Personal secret file". So Bush never had any reason to even know they existed.
BRING IT ON!
Kitty on deck.
Valid points. Let's see what happens tonight.
They have no right to dispose Bush. What light could Bush shed on them? These are the private thoughts of a dead man. What could Bush attest too???
John
I agree they'll get worse and more strident. BUT even on CNN an "analyst" said that Bush won't be hurt because he is not running on his National Guard service. The MAN they have come to know is who they will or will not be voting for....not a 22 year old kid. Kerry on the other hand was hurt because people were unsure about his foreign policy and national security positions ANYWAY
Folks - in this case depose means remove from power.
A Freeper exposes a MAJOR FRAUD!
Get ready for CBS's counter attack, they know that if this continues they are toast. Rather will come out tonight and say very hard that they are real, with many sources to vouch for them and perhaps show the superscript th on another document that the Kerry Spot mentioned. He will say experts ( perhaps on air if the money is good) prove the docs are real and that no one else exaimined the real documents only copies. and then attack Bush, saying like earlier today that he needs to address their content. Then most of the MSM will back him, because its their heads also
Or ends up in Leavinworth with a 300 lb man named Bubbah who calls you "Luvuh".
They aren't that powerful.
In their mind they are THE power.
John
I think you are giving too much power to CBS.
This is all designed to be an exact counterpoint to the SwiftVets. They are being swept off the cable news and replaced with talk of GWB's guard service.
Boy, you know - I was just thinking the same thing. If any mileage is to be gained from this it had better happen quickly. I still remember the glee here as Kenneth Star delivered the van loads of documents to the Congress. Slick's goin' down, we said. Never happened.
We get gleeful fast, the Democrats get dirty.
