"What if the forged original was printed onto paper that had been run through a copier numerous times. Then it was photocopied only once or twice which made it look old, but maintained spacing close to original, etc."That's a possability but probably unlikely. Mulltiple copies tend to spread and get real rough edges. Also, pock marks in the drum cylinder tend to show up more and I don't see them. That's what makes multiple copies look old.
"Then when a new version was typed and overlain, it would fit almost perfectly."
In my opinion, and I'm as good an expert on this subject (not bragging) as anyone, this document is so doctored it is disgusting. I would say, at best, this is only a 3rd or 4th generation copy. I can tell by the small amount of size reduction.
Experts have not mentioned the Mag Card machines that were popular at that time. THEY DID HAVE PROPORTIONAL SPACING. And, they were popular in heavy production areas of the government. What you did is type it in with standard type and when it printed it right line justified with proportional spacing. But they didn't have these units out in the field so lets dismiss this theory. They were normal ball Selectricts out in the field. Nothing fancy.
The likelyhood that both printed images on this document are the same machine is ABSOLUTELY 100% ZERO. A copy was simply inserted into a more modern machine and information added. What a poor job they did.
I sold over a million typewriters and word processors for IBM, A. B. Dick and Lanier in the 70's and early 80's.

the suspicious blacking-out leaves one of two possibilities. You left out a third possibility. The .pdf document on the CBS website was Photoshopped.

BTW, I live in NC and can verify that it's 10 to 1 W stickers/posters Same here. I live in the liberal hell hole(except soldiers at bragg) of Cumberland County(fayetteville) and I do not see hardly any Kerry Edwards stickers except on attorneys vehicles.

I agree. The forger also had no idea that few men typed at that time and fewer executives did so. ANd had no idea of the proper format for a dictation/typist report.
Killian's widow and son described the sort of man I know quite well: didn't type; hated writing letters; did not keep organized journals/files of his personal thoughts/actions; had a wallet file cabinet w/myriad tiny loose pieces of paper; and probably (speculation) did not spend a lot of time in CYA because he was a man of integrity and didn't have to.(/speculation)

The Font Type is a Font that, apparently, wasn't actually licensed for use until around 1980... But, I digress LOL

I don't believe you are correct. When I turned 18 in 1971, I was issued a lottery number -- 180, as I recall.

I noticed that certain segments featuring Rather's voice were obviously recorded at an earlier time for in these segments he sounds the way he normally does. As you say, there is a huge difference between these segments and the way he sounds when he is trying to defend the documents.

Dan Rather's little performance tonight was his version of Bill Clinton's "I did not have sex with that woman."

Excellent get. It also explains why Rather focused on the matching signatures (ignoring the possibility of photocopied and pasted signatures). That was the ONLY expertise that his expert had.
typewriters, military styles of language and abbreviations, page layout, paper size, would all be hopelessly beyond his competence.

"The pixel-level match with MS Word 2004 using Times New Roman is pretty much game/set/match"
I've been wondering about the pixel-level match. Did you see any evidence of 300-dpi or 600-dpi laser-printer pixels?

is this supported by the "authentic" Bush documents from earlier, I think duty reports that do have a "th"? Are those "th" raised but just the same size?

You're right, I'm wrong. The first lottery was Dec 1 1969.
But didn't Bush enlist in May 1968?
To: afz400
I would also add that they use of "CYA" is suspect. CYA is often spoken, but typing it out as the title of a document is suspicious I'm also interested in this. I'm having trouble with a origin search on that name and when it was first widely used within military settings.
