CBS EVENING NEWS WITH DAN RATHER to address, in detail, the issues surrounding the authenticity of the documents broadcast in the 60 MINUTES report on President Bush's service in the Texas Air National Guard... Developing...
Anybody going to give the play-by-play tonight?
I have to be gone during the 5:30 time slot.
Problem - They're going to obsess over the superscript "th" while ignoring the other overwhelming evidence. Then let the weekend and Ivan the Terrible cover up any further discussion of the other issues with the documents. Presto, chango, another Burger-gate coverup.
"All documents have been verified. No further answers needed."

So Dan is going to say that his source is the same that gave him the Abu Ghraib pics. Should we believe that? And if that isn't true, why would Dan say that? By saying it was the Abu Ghraib source, does that add credibility to the docs since AG turned out to be true?
This is very interesting. Or does Dan figure since he's going down, he might as well re-raise the subject of Abu Ghraib?
This is sooooo curious.
How exactly does a typewriter in 1968 type this?
Bush wasnt here during rating period and I dont have any feedback from 187th in Alabama.
Wouldnt it be more like this?
Bush wasnt here during rating period and I dont have any feedback from 187th in Alabama.
On the typerwrites that some are saying could do superscript, did it require changing the print ball or key rack? And would anyone go to this trouble just to make the "th" in superscript? th Sure seems like a lot of trouble to go through.
Dan is probably typing away on an old typewriter right now, then he`s going to wash it and smudge it up a bit..."Uh uh..All we did is copy from the original ..this is the original document we copied from..As you can see it`s the same document word for word" Then someone is going to point out that the "original" has the CBS logo on it. OOPS!!
I can hear it now...Rove did it
The proof is in the kerning!

Someone give play by play. PLEASE
If he doesn't type out a perfectly recreated copy from an IBM executive typewriter (I'm sure CBS has the resources to get one), then I am DELETING MY CBSSPORTSLINE FANTASY FOOTBALL TEAM!!! Who wants Ricky Williams? :)
Rather's betting the farm on his ability to prove the authenticity of these documents. I don't think that the usual one-sided explanation is going to work this time. If that's what he's got in mind, then he might as well take the cyanide now.

Succinct write-up re the IBM Selectric's inability to create the memos in question:

The page may require a few tries, as it's reportedly getting LOTS of hits...
