Bush Leadership on Homeland Security Undercut By His Refusal to Renew Ban, Say Voters in Florida, Pennsylvania and Ohio; Voters Make Clear Distinction Between Generic "Gun Control" Issues and Renewing Ban on Assault Weapons
Washington, DC - The results of new polling released today by Penn, Schoen and Berland Associates show conclusively that voters in three election swing states view President Bush's blocking of the national Assault Weapons Ban as a pivotal indicator of his lack of leadership on homeland security. This finding is potentially damaging to the Bush campaign at a point when President Bush has been promoting his strength on national security issues. As importantly, support for the ban results in three key "swing" states moving from close races into clear leads for Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry.
The recent poll also highlights that a strong position on extending the Assault Weapons Ban is an issue that can mean the difference between a Kerry and Bush victory in the November presidential election. Poll findings indicate that:
In Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania, President Bush loses significant ground on being "best equipped to handle terrorism" after voters are told his position on the Assault Weapons Ban;
Voters make a clear distinction between generic "gun control" issues and renewing the ban on assault weapons; The Assault Weapons Ban issue alters the presidential race, resulting in Kerry victory in all three pivotal "swing states," including giving Kerry an 11 point lead in Pennsylvania;
In addition to significant support for renewing the ban in all three states, national support for renewing the ban is also very high, with 74% in favor of renewal. These findings mean a setback for the Bush/Cheney campaign as it attempts to make Republican leadership on Homeland Security a major dividing line between the two presidential candidates. The poll results also indicate that support for renewing the Assault Weapons Ban is a factor in Senate and Congressional races in all three states.
Although President Bush claimed in 1999 that "it makes no sense for assault weapons to be around our society," he continues to play politics with the issue, refusing to push Republican Congressional leadership to renew the ban -- despite the fact that an aide to House Speaker Dennis Hastert has said that "if Bush pushes for it, the ban will probably be reauthorized. But if he doesn't, the chances of legislation passing this year are remote." Support for renewal of the ban has also been the subject of over 85 editorials in newspapers in 32 states -- from Alabama, Georgia and Texas to California, Illinois and Michigan.
Methodology:
Penn, Schoen and Berland Associates conducted 500 interviews with likely voters. The overall margin of error is +/- 4.38% and larger for subgroups.
Secondly, if they want to push on this as a wedge, I'll counter with the .30-30 ban that Kerry voted for. We'll see who wins thete.
Third, I remember 1994 well.
Fourth, what's the question asked?
"Do you favor renewal of the assault weapons ban, or do you want innocent children to die?"
500 with a 4.38 moe?
This is like a Zogby poll..IT SUXS
I believe 4th was, who said Bush was blocking it? Last I heard he said he supported it, although he's clearly not breaking his back to push it through! Ahhh, strategery.
Lol. What exactly were they "told"?

Whoopie Sh*t.
An editorial means zip, nada, nothing.
Die Bit*h,DIE!
Could this be any more of a push-poll?
This poll is pure unadulterated BS. There are only two groups that care about the so called "assault weapons ban." The first, to which I belong, are 2nd Ammendment advocates like the NRA - we don't like someone telling us we can't keep and bear military style arms - the whole purpose of the 2nd Ammendment. The second are the types that don't trust anyone with a firearm - especially those that are weapons (Feinstein, Schmurr, ad naseum).
The average Joe or Jane doens't get a rip either way.
Most of the people polled don't even know the meaning of "assault weapon" in the AWB. By most I mean 99%.
The simple fact is that this is a BS poll conducted by an unknown organization, which coincidentally came out on the last scheduled legislative day before the AWB is scheduled to die. Someone is desperate.
"According to Washington Business Forward, PSB's "reputation is largely as a Democratic political polling firm, closely associated with both President Bill Clinton's administration as well as the Senate campaign of his wife Hillary. But the firm also worked for Republican Michael Bloomberg in his mayoral bid in New York City, generating huge fees from the multi-millionaire self-financed candidate that caught some press attention during the campaign. ... Major corporate clients over the years have included AT&T, Coca-Cola, American Express, BP, Novartis and Microsoft."[5][6] "

End of story, end of spin.

Americans for Gun Safety/Penn, Schoen, and Berland Associates (October 2003): 77% support renewing Assault Weapons Ban
AGS - Started by Andrew McKelvey. Hired one of Schumer's chiefs Jon Cowan, and was in Atlanta consulting the democraps on the gun issue in order to attempt to fool us.
Jointogether is an antigun organization like HCI - like they'd bother with the truth on a gun issue. Might as well get your "facts" from upChuck Schemer or Diane Feinswine
(viewed as) "...a pivotal indicator of his lack of leadership on homeland security."
A gun in the hands of a law-abiding citizen IS homeland security.
He supported it (in words) before he didn't support it (in actions). I'm paying rather more attention to his actions (or lack thereof) than his words.
I staked out a position months ago that the ugly-gun ban was my make-or-break issue on voting Bush vs. voting Constitution Party. If the ugly gun ban is dead on Sept. 14, I'll be sending a big check to the Bush-Cheney campaign. If it stays dead, I'll be voting for Bush-Cheney.
Right now, things are looking pretty good for the President.
It's another false document. Bush is not refusing to renew the ban.
Want to guess where 85 of their "blind poll" responses came from?
I know all about Join Together. I read them (especially Dick Dahl's bull) to see the other side.
This poll is bogus. If the assault weapons ban was a big issue, the Democrats would be running like hell on it.
Most folks care about it, but not that much.
