Former Lt. Gov. Ben Barnes — then the 29-year-old speaker of the Texas House — told CBS News Anchor Dan Rather that he used influence on Mr. Bush's behalf at the request of a Houston businessman friendly with the Bush family, oilman Sid Adger.

Um, as of yesterday, weren't they claiming Barnes held some other office at the time that he got Bush into the NG? Lt. Gov. maybe? An office that he didn't hold until a year after Bush signed up. Somebody refresh my memory on this.

Yes. He spoke of facilitating these kinds of things while in both offices.

Yes. At the time that Bush joined the TANG, Barnes was in Europe serving in a UN appointment. At that time, the Texas Legislature met only every other year, which was why Barnes scarfed up the additional job from the UN.
