CBS/AP) Questions are being raised about the authenticity of newly unearthed memos that say President Bush's National Guard commander believed Mr. Bush was shirking his duties.

The memos, which were obtained by CBS News' 60 Minutes, say Mr. Bush ignored a direct order from a superior officer and lost his status as a Guard pilot because he failed to meet military performance standards and undergo a required physical exam.

Self Correction: (Available on some IBM selectrics): that's 2000 not 1992.

"This report was not based solely on recovered documents, but rather on a preponderance of evidence, including documents that were provided by unimpeachable sources (who?), interviews with former Texas National Guard officials (Who?) and individuals (WHO?) who worked closely back in the early 1970s with Colonel Jerry Killian and were well acquainted with his procedures, his character and his thinking," the statement read.

"In addition, the documents are backed up not only by independent handwriting and forensic document experts (WHO) but by sources familiar with their content," the statement continued. "Contrary to some rumors, no internal investigation is underway at CBS News nor is one planned."

Interesting to note, in the story Rather said they were authenticated by "an" expert, now it's "experts". So when did the other mystery experts look at it?

CBS can't stonewall this. We are talking about forging Federal documents and interfering in a federal election. John Ashcroft, where are you?

Um, as of yesterday, weren't they claiming Barnes held some other office at the time that he got Bush into the NG? Lt. Gov. maybe?

Yes. He spoke of facilitating these kinds of things while in both offices.

I suppose the store of the supposed forgery is much more interesting than the supposed contents of the supposed memos were supposed to be. (A truly supository sentence.)

Supository? Supository sentence? Where do you place one of those, Doctor?

I freeped 'em - awarded them the Jayson Blair Journalism Prize. Asked who their "expert" was - Michael Moore?

***...that Barne's daughter quotes him as saying in a phone call that he was willing to lie in order to hurt Bush and help Kerry.***

I also read on FR that Barne's daughter said that her father is writing a book and plans to use this lie as the first part of his book. Even more suspicious.

Yes. At the time that Bush joined the TANG, Barnes was in Europe serving in a UN appointment. At that time, the Texas Legislature met only every other year, which was why Barnes scarfed up the additional job from the UN.

It is now becoming very clear to me that the "brain trust" at DNC said if SwiftBoat Vets can slam Kerry, they can do the same.

They organized a group of willing accomplices in Texas to be the Texans for Truth or whatever it is called. They then had them do some television adds. They DNC operatives then sent the initial add copy and tapes to Dan Rather along with "documents used by the group as 'proof' of their claims." Then they allowed the CBS 60 minutes fact checkers to call the Texans for Truth group to chat.

Of course Dan Blathering-idiot-Rather stands by his story, he has the preponderance of evidence from all kinds of follows of good reputation to back him up.

Of course if Dan goes down in flames he can claim to be a "VICTIM," which is the highest form of excuse among his liberal democratic friend. Being a victim is an excuse for anything up to and including murder.

I like the way Blather throws around the word expert.

In one way Dan is an expert, that is, an “ex” is a has-been and a “spert” is a drip under pressure.

Fox had some idiot on a while ago who had worked with Howard Dean. He was asked about the documents and went into a tirade about the docs being a distraction from the "real issues" and rambled about how Bush didn't serve and Kerry volunteered to go to Vietnam etc. Did anybody say that segment? That guy was not just an idiot, he was rude.

I also heard on Fox just a moment ago that the documents had a PO BOX on the letterhead not a real address. The P.O. Box was 34567. D-U-H-H-H!!!!!
