NAACP Headquarters Blocks Cleveland Chapter's Invitation to Education Secretary

CLEVELAND (AP) - The state NAACP has withdrawn a convention speaking invitation to U.S. Education Secretary Rod Paige at the request of the group's national office.

Paige, who was invited three weeks ago to discuss education reforms, was cut from the weekend program at the request of the national office, Ohio NAACP President Sybil Edwards-McNabb said Thursday.

The state meeting of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People was opening Friday in Cleveland.

Edwards-McNabb said national NAACP leaders told her there was an "imbalance" in her slate of convention speakers. She said she had invited President Bush and the Democratic nominee for president, Sen. John Kerry.

Bush agreed to send Paige, she said, but Kerry did not respond.

John White, spokesman for the national NAACP based in Baltimore, said he was unaware that Edwards-McNabb had been directed to cut Paige, who is black.

Paige's office said the invitation was withdrawn Tuesday. "They said, 'Thanks, but no thanks,'" according to Susan Aspey, Paige's press secretary, who said Paige was disappointed.

Kerry did not respond so we have to cut the Bush speaker...

The logic of this racist and socialist organization defies me...

Rod Paige

I'm no fan of the Education Department, but I heard this guy speak on Hannity during the RNC and I had a very favorable opinion of him.

But he is a conservative black man and that makes him the enemy, I suppose.

Their loss.

Hold a non-partisan town hall meeting there! Rent the room, invite NAACP members. Circulate flyers.

LOL! These people must enjoy their proverbial chains and plantation. I bet Kerry really has contempt for blacks.

The NAACP might as well go around wearing white hoods. Amazing though that they shun all blacks who don't toe the radical line.

I have some friends from Houston who are in the education establishment and look upon Mr. Paige with great disdain, viewing him as incompetent at the very best. If their assessment of him is accurate, it would seem at least disappointing to find him in President Bush’s cabinet.

Nonetheless, the NAALCP has proven themselves to be the enemy time and time again and no one should be surprised or even outraged at this point.

Well, they said the same thing about Paige's successor too. HISD is held in a death grip by Gail Falon and the teacher's union. No matter what happens in HISD, it is somehow the board's fault.

From His Bio:

Born in 1933 in segregated Monticello, Mississippi, Paige's accomplishments speak of his commitment to education. He earned a bachelor's degree from Jackson State University in his home state. He then earned both a master's and a doctoral degree from Indiana University.

Paige began working with students early in his career as a teacher and a coach. He then served for a decade as dean of the College of Education at Texas Southern University (TSU). In this position, Paige worked to ensure that future educators would receive the training and expertise necessary to succeed in the classroom. He also established the university's Center for Excellence in Urban Education, a research facility that concentrates on issues related to instruction and management in urban school systems.

**

Yea, you sure wouldn't want this guy talking to the NAACP. He's no example for anyone to follow. Born in Mississippi in 1933? Do you think he's seen some discrimination in his life? It's unbelievable that would even THINK about cutting him let alone do it.

There is NO WAY they are a credible organization that should garner ANY respect from ANYONE.

Let me see if I have this right here...

The NAACP invites President Bush to its National Convention earlier this year.

President Bush declines the invitation, citing his schedule.

The NAACP blast President Bush as a racist and an enemy of African American people because he is too busy to show up at their National Convention.

The Ohio Chapter of the NAACP invites President Bush and Senator Kerry to its State Convention.

President Bush responds by saying that the Secretary of Education will appear in his stead.

Senator Kerry does not respond at all.

The NAACP responds by uninviting Secretary Paige.

Lewis Carroll, please call your office. Alice is calling and wants to speak to you.

With all due respect to you and your friends "in the Education establishment" in Houston, it would seems to me that your friends' "great disdain" for Secretary Paige only enhances my personal view of him.

The "education establishment" has, in my view, given us a third-world public education system where kids graduate from high school without the ability to compose a coherent paragraph.

"But he is a conservative black man and that makes him the enemy, I suppose. BINGO!! That is why they hate Condoleeza Rice and Colin Powell!"

Proving, once again, that "diversity" and "minority rights" and most other liberal movements are about politics first and the theme of the movement second.

Another case in point -- how many times has Clarence Thomas been invited to speak to a minority organization?

Jeez, Condi Rice has enough problems without implying that she is a "conservative black man".

Then again, there are some who think Colin Powell isn't conservative.

Seriesly, the NAALCP would never have pulled an invite from a 'Rat, even if SecEd was Sheets Byrd.

It's a shame, because the people attending these conventions aren't the real losers. The real losers are people in the African-American community who have followed their leaders into blindly supporting the Democratic Party, which takes them for granted and is stuck on 1960's solutions to problems.
