Here's proof positive we don't need guns, we just need to dedicate our lives to Karate. I wonder if these guys could have dodged bullets if it turned out they brought karate to a gunfight.

The part I liked best was the feign move. It gave the pimp a sense of confidence as this guy was pulling his hands over his head... that confidence opened him up for a solid shot.

That is EXACTLY what I am talking about. In a real fight, you must beat the opponent mentally before you can beat them physically.

I started tae kwan do, and when I have to spar a guy who is a foot taller than me, or built like a Mack truck, I think, who am I kidding. Who wants to fight by the rules if I have to fight. I have no reach. I would like a lethal weapon to hand.

On the other hand, there is this 13 year old girl black belt, no taller than me, and a good deal slimmer, and if anyone messes with her, they will be unpleasantly surprised.

Ya want some ka-ra-te, would you like some fries with that Ka-ra-te?

I don't know why, and I don't why but I picture, the more I think about these I keep comparing them to the two guys who ran out on the field at the ball game last year.

reminds me of docu of the "ice man" the hitman who lived a suburban life,he said it always amazed him how confident and clueless thug threats were, as he's easily kill them in a heart beat

I may have seen that video. The one I have in mind took place in Houston about 10 years ago. Here is more to the story (I do not have first-hand knowledge, my CBS legal disclaimer): the instructor was sued by the pimp, partly on grounds that (a) the instructor hit first and (b) the instructor was white, and the pimp was African American, thus the instructor was racist. The pimp lost the suit because (1) slow play of the video clearly showed that the pimp started his punch first and (2) the instructor was in the process of retiring from training, and the person to whom he was giving his business (and substantial value) was his close friend and primary student for many years, an African American (who testified on the instructor’s behalf).

"Do you want karate?" he asked.

"No, I'll take the Moo Shu Pork, shrimp toast, one egg drop soup..."

I heard one of the muggers was puppy!

Yes. And Al Sharpton is reporting that the one that got kicked is an honor student who spends his free time taking care of his elderly grandmother. Al says that, had the honor student been white, the Karate instructor would not have kicked him. Plus the statement, 'do you want Karate?' is clearly indicitive of racial hatred. This was a hate crime, folks. A hate crime against an honor student who tend to old ladies.

10-12 years ago an airman at McDill AFB in FL was driving home when he was approached by two woud-be carjackers at a stop light. When they jerked his door open and ordered him out of his car he came out fighting. Turns out he was a highly trained martial arts instructor at the air base, and he quickly put both thugs in the hospital with broken bones and other more serious injuries.

The bad part of the story is that he was arrested and charged with using excessive force after the threat was ended or some such nonsense. If I remember right, a witness said he continued to whack the perps around for a while after they were disarmed and on the ground. I don't remember if he went to trial or if the charge was dropped. I think it was the latter, but it was outrageous that he was ever charged to begin with. Maybe someone else here remembers that incident better than I do and could fill me in on how it turned out for the guy.

Craig Nordstrand, 47, had just beaten off four of the attackers

A rather bad choice of words for the author to use.

There's a tale my ex inlaws tell of my ex BIL. The guy was a nerd extaordinare who had been picked on his school life. He started going to Karate lessons in the 5th grade and never used it on the street until 3rd year of high school when 3 guys harrased him and shoved him around in a bathroom. He beat the crap out of all three of them and was never mouthed off to in school again.

This action by the 'martial artist' tells me alot about him.

It could be that he was giving them a chance to break off the confrontation without anyone getting hurt. That's what a karateka might do if he was more interested in spending an evening unmolested than in kicking some Fijian butt.

Even good fighters want to avoid fighting, if they're smart. A lot of random stuff happens in fights, stuff that you can't always deal with no matter how good you are. If you can manage it, not fighting is better.

That's what they taught US.

Pick a guy, take him down as quickly and as messily as possible. Kill or disable.

Then, see if the pack still wants a piece of you.

Never had a chance to try, myself...

= )

It's a bad translation, but I for one agree with his actions. The first goal is to avoid conflict. When confronted, try to defeat the opponent without fighting. Sounds to me like this instructor was a good student as well.
