Audience left numb as Osama comes alive
Express News Service
Pune, September 9: OPENING the week-long 2nd Asian Film Festival organised by the Aashay Film Club was the Siddiq Barmak directed film, Osama. The film portraying the suppression of women during the Taliban regime in Afghanistan, narrates the travails of a 12-year-old girl disguised as a boy by her mother to help them both survive. The film, the first feature film made in the post-Taliban era, left viewers numbness with the shocking details of life under Taliban rule.
The festival, coinciding with the 75th year of Prabhat Cinema, is organised by Aashay along with the National Film Archives of India, the Film and Television Institute of India and the Asian Film Foundation, Mumbai. Inaugurated by Vijaya Mehta, the festival was graced by Kiran Shantaram, Smita Talwalkar, Prachi Javdekar from Indira Institute of Management, Tripurari Sharan, director FTII and K Shashidharan, director, NFAI.
Inaugurating the festival Vijaya Mehta said, Film festivals are different from other art festivals because the latter are presented live and the audiences involvement is necessary for its enjoyment. Films require no great effort on the part of the audience.
Addressing the audience, Shantaram said, Asian films get a raw deal in film festivals which are dominated by American and European film-makers. Thus the audience has very little or no exposure to Asian films.

Why? SO they can screech "This is what the Republicans want to do!"
Osama builds day care centers... Senator Patty Murray (D WA)
This Republican feminist would love to see the movie.
BTW, please don't lump all feminists with the FemiNazis. Feminism with regards to the support, encouragement and nurturing of women and female children is not an evil concept. Rather, individuals with evil agendas have bastardized the concept.
It would be great if they would post it on the net. Or run it in swing states. Or both.
They actually do say that we simply want to replace the Taliban with Western Patriarchy, so there is really no difference b/w the two.
This has been available on DVD for some time. It is a great film and, in my opinion, one of the most important films of the last decade.
Can you talk some details about the movie? What made the greatest impression? What still sticks in your mind? Thanks.
Nope, you're normal. Most of the rest of the world is not, however, and sadly the term "girls" is in some circles an emotionally-charged and/or derogatory term. Please forgive my use of PC on this forum. I sometimes forget the identity of my audience.
What's REALLY frightening is the notion that most wahhabists (which comprise 80% of the Islamic imams in the U.S.) think the Taliban's way of treating women is spot-on. That's what they want for the rest of us!
I bought a copy of Osama on DVD when it was released earlier in the year. It is likely the most relentlessly depressing great film I have ever seen. I cannot explain it to you. It must be seen to be understood or, more accurately, felt down to your core.
It will leave you devastated, but you will also swell with pride that our troops put an end to the domination of these vermin.

They would rather believe Michael Moore's lies.
Check Blockbuster, that's where I found it.
The hopelessness of the main character who is a girl disguised as a boy to avoid starvation for her family - all women. She is caught when she menstrates for the 1st time. Instead of the normal stoning to death, she is saved by a crony iman of the judge and packed off to a poor harem for raping / baby production. The sadness is that the iman is elderly and the whole harem may be without a means of survival when he dies. Poignant due to the recuring theme of the girl jump roping even in jail.
