ABC News: Son of Late Officer Questions Bush Memos
ABC News ^ | 9-9-2004 | AP

DALLAS Sept. 9, 2004 — The authenticity of newly unearthed memos stating that George W. Bush failed to meet standards of the Texas Air National Guard during the Vietnam War was questioned Thursday by the son of the late officer who reportedly wrote the memos. "I am upset because I think it is a mixture of truth and fiction here," said Gary Killian, son of Lt. Col. Jerry Killian, who died in 1984.

Gary Killian, who served in the Guard with his father and retired as a captain in 1991, said one of the memos, signed by his father, appeared legitimate. But he doubted his father would have written another, unsigned memo which said there was pressure to "sugar coat" Bush's performance review.

"It just wouldn't happen," he said. "The only thing that can happen when you keep secret files like that are bad things. ... No officer in his right mind would write a memo like that."

News reports have said the memos, first obtained by CBS's "60 Minutes II," were found in Jerry Killian's personal records. Gary Killian said his father wasn't in the habit of bringing his work home with him, and that the documents didn't come from the family.

CBS stood by its reporting. "As a standard practice at CBS, each of the documents broadcast on "60 Minutes" was thoroughly investigated by independent experts and we are convinced of their authenticity," CBS News said in a statement.

The White House distributed the four memos from 1972 and 1973 after obtaining them from CBS News. The White House did not question their accuracy.

One of the Memo's dated August 73 claims pressure from a higher ranking officier to help Bush .....it looks forged ....but it is really dubious since the General retired in 1972......

See this for details:

(forgive my ignorance, I am very tired and am having trouble thinking)

Drink a warm glass of milk and go to bed.

You might think better in the morning.

If that is true then why didn't at least the superscript catch the experts attention?

As soon as the documents were posted on cbsnews.com, freepers were pointing out the anachronistic nature of the memos. It doesn't say much for CBS, and their expert, that they missed these obvious errors.

"Can't prove it can't be done, but I haven't done it easily as reportedly happens with MS Word."

Would you guess, as I would, that it's a federal crime to possess/use forged and altered government documents for the purpose of committing massive fraud over state lines in an effort to interfere with a federal election and to do so under color of a federally granted broadcasting license?

And further, if there were reasonable cause to believe this had occured, wouldn't the Attorney General, in response to citizen complaint, have authority to order an FBI investigation of such alleged crime?

And, if such an order were given by the AG, wouldn't the FBI have ample resources for determining how these documents were made, what machine/s they were typed on, and when they could and could not have been composed? Wouldn't the FBI be in position to determine where that stationary came from, how old it was, whether the Texas/Alabama ANGs used it back then, as well as similar information about the ink/s?

My answer to all of these question is "yes."

I'm not sure what somebody did and what the law says about it. I'm pretty sure Dan Rather was candy for some fraudster because he'd have wanted to forge these documents himself if he dared.

Incidentally, the point of this experiment is to show that it's very, very hard to get superimposable text with two different modern word processing programs. WordPerfect and MS Word don't seem to want to agree to that degree.

Nevertheless, CBS standing by its story and all that, MS Word and some long-ago typewriter apparently make text that shadows. Furthermore, it's reportedly EASY to do with the default font and character size of MS Word.

Also: The letter format is IAW today's standard, not those in use in 1972. Killian's signature is right of center on these memos...USAF change to that style in the 90's. Killian's signatur should have been left justified.

The White House distributed the four memos from 1972 and 1973 after obtaining them from CBS News" Is it just possible that someone in the Bush Whitehouse is smart enough to figure this forgery out and distributed them without comment to sink Dan Rather forever? Just thinking Karl Rove is that smart is scary. But nice scary.:-)

I didn't have time; I was just heading out the door for a meeting to paint signs for our 9/11 rally, then I had a meeting of BC '04 Precinct Chairs, then I went out to help set up the GOP booth at the county fair.

(Someone remind me again why I signed up for this?)

Anyway, I figured if I called everyone's attention to it, someone else would post it.

Now I've got to catch up on the news.
