Bush is canny enough to not personally get too involved with this. After all, one of his biggest assets is his presidential, above-politics image. A White House official should privately demand that CBS issue an explicit withdrawal and apology for the story, which would pretty much end CBS's credibility for the forseeable future (certainly until election day, which is what matters) without dragging the President into a dog-fight.

There were many here who SLAMMED Bush for not getting in the dirt---for many months---and just as he did in the Florida recounts, he stays above it all. This comes from a) FAITH that God will work this out, and b) CONFIDENCE that the Dems are such morons they will knock themselves in the head with a ball peen hammer if given half a chance.
