BEWARE of SCAM- money to DNC thinking I was donating to Swift Boat Veterans
DNC ^ | 9/08/04 | SDR

Posted on 09/08/2004 6:29:43 PM PDT by Stars&StripesNE

I have contributed to the Swift Boat Vets on two different occasions. Today, when I opened my e-mail, there was a thank you note from them, along with news of upcoming ads they will be running. I clicked on the link to contribute again. As I look back, I realize the form didn't look the same and I never looked at the header. (my mistake) However, I filled it out and contributed $50.00.

When the completed form popped up, I nearly had a heart attack!! I had contrubuted $50.00 to the Democrat National Party, complete with John Kerry's picture. I immediately called my credit card company to have it removed. I was told I must wait until I receive the bill to dispute the "contribution".

To those of you who will be contributing to the Swift Boat Veterans, PLEASE BEWARE the Democrats have a little pop up scam going. I will making phone calls in the morning to alert radio talk shows et al if this outrageous SCAM.

My e-mail and donation link were fine, and I hope this doesn't discourage anyone from donating! They need support!

Also got an e-mail from Marc Racicot, stating in part:
"The Bush-Cheney ’04 Compliance Committee must raise $5,000,000 in the next 45 days. And it can only come from one of two places: Either we raise it from the President’s closest supporters like you or we’ll have to take it from the General Election Fund.

That’s right: By law, if we don’t raise this money now, the campaign will have to pay legal and accounting costs associated with complying with election laws from the general campaign account, taking money we need from our Get-Out-The-Vote efforts.

So it’s up to you to meet the challenge.

Federal election law permits you to give an additional donation of up to $2,000 to help offset our campaign’s legal and accounting costs incurred during the general election

And that releases $5,000,000 we can spend on Get-Out-The-Vote efforts. Can we count on you? Please do everything you can over the next 45 days."

Do what you can, and thanks.

Just checked my credit card statement. It states XXXXX Swift Boat Vets for T as recipient. Now, I am hoping that there just wasn't enough room for "Truth".

I heard John O'Neill talking about this yesterday on Dennis Prager. Said that the DNC had bought up all familiar sounding URLs. Said to be very careful about making sure you went to correct site.

Do you have a credit card ID# for the transaction? They must have one in order to process the transaction. Give it out here and I'll help to stop them. If you don't want to post it in public Freepmail me. What they did is a CRIME! You have documentation so DON'T lose it! They can be prosecuted for what they did.

"If two e-mails were sent, compare the timing. Mine, which I believe is legit, was sent at 2:07p today."

You missed my point. No one is claiming to have received more than one email. If there was some sort of scam going on, I would expect that some people would receive both the real email and the fake email. Since this has not happened, then I don't put much credence in this entire story.

Apology accepted, I think I might have over reacted after seeing that others have have had the same experience. To make amends, I have gone to the swift Vets site nad gave them a contribution.

Oh no! I just sent $100 today too using that email that I thought they sent.

It didn't look different from the other times I sent. One thing tho, after sending the confirmation to send the money, the page that I filled out to begin with showed up again.

I did get a confirmation e-mail right after.

I have stated, I am not faulting the Swift Boat Vets here at all. I believe THEY ARE BEING SCAMMED BY THE DNC!!! When I clicked on the link to donate, obviously a pop up interferred and I was at the DNC site instead of the Swift Boat Site. I have informed the Swift Boat Vets of the problem that I encountered.

I endorse and support the Swift Boat Veterans. I didn't know if anyone else had encountered the same as I had. And for the record, I did donate successfully to the Swiftees tonight after I had reported the scam to my credit card company.

Call them again. You don't have to wait until you're scammed to contest it any more than you have to wait until you're billed to report to the company that your card has been lost or stolen. Tell them that it was a case of fraud. Report it to the FBI online fraud unit.

Interesting. I just got a Swift Vet email asking me to donate, but the link I got was directly to the site that you can get to by clicking on "Keep this Ad on the air" from www.swiftvets.com.

Either you got a different email, or you are an imposter trying to make potential Swift Vet contributors gun shy about responding to Swift Vet email solicitations. I don't know you or have any reason to suspect this, other than the fact that the link from an email solicitation I just got was valid.

Solution: Everyone who wants to donate to the Swift Vets should get to the contributions page via the Swift Vets website.

I just did. Again. :)

I would like to extend my sincere and personal gratitude for your generous contribution to Swift Boat Veterans for Truth. I am sure you have seen the impact your contribution has had on the public discussion surrounding Senator Kerry's fitness for duties as Commander-in-Chief.
You have helped us to raise awareness of these important issues - and the American people are beginning to respond.

We would not be where we are today, with what we have accomplished, without your help. Our mission is far from over, however.

John Kerry's campaign - aided by a sympathetic media - has responded to our work by evading our criticisms and turning up the volume on their attacks. They have attempted to discredit our efforts by falsely tying us to the Bush campaign.

Their attacks will only get louder and more strident because they know that, on the merits, we cannot lose.

Our work has struck a chord with the American people, including many Vets, who have come to the Swift Boats web site and pledged their support. You have already done so much to help us, but I'm here now to ask you to help once more. We are at a critical point in this effort and we must keep our ads - including some new ones which I think you'll really appreciate — on the airwaves in key battleground states. We are up against the big guns, and we now need to make sure they can't drown us out.

For this reason, I am asking you to consider matching your previous contribution. If that's not possible at this time, every little bit helps. The quickest way to donate is by clicking on the logo below:

We can also receive checks through the postal service at:

Swift Boat Veterans for Truth
C/O Weymouth Symmes, Treasurer
P.O. Box 26184
Alexandria, VA 22313

You can lend a hand, as well, by passing this information on to other friends you think might be interested in helping us tell the true story of John Kerry.

Please remember that Swift Boat Veterans for Truth is an independent group under section 527 of the Internal Revenue Code and is not affiliated with any political party or candidate for public office. Contributions to Swift Boat Veterans for Truth are not tax deductible for federal income tax purposes. Federal tax law requires us to collect and report the name, mailing address, occupation and name of employer of each individual whose contributions exceed $200 in a calendar year. Therefore, please be sure to provide us with this information so that we can satisfy our reporting requirements.

Thank you again for your support of the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth.

Sincerely,
Roy Hoffman, Admiral, USN, (retired)

I received the same email and thank you note from them.

I also checked out the headers in the emails and they do go to swiftvets.com. Then I did whois and it went back to swiftvets.com. Then I did a tracert to the IP address 64.62.151.115 and it came back to swiftvets.com

I'm sure there are more savey guys/gals out there that can verify this.

Have you let the SwiftBoat Vets know about this? I am so disgusted with the Democrats antics. What trash! :(

First of all, have you contacted swiftboat vets to find out whether they sent out the email? Forward the email you received to them.

Second, if you still have the email, move your cursor over to the link, don't click on it, move it over and check to see if the url that shows up at the bottom of the window is the same as the url on the email.

A week ago I got an ebay scam email, while the link that showed up on the email looked like a legit ebay url, the url at the bottom of my window was not the same as the url address on the email.
