United Defense Defeats RPGs with Close-In Counter Measure Active Protection System On Sept. 8, United Defense Industries announced that its Close-In Counter Measure (CICM) active protection system successfully intercepted and destroyed incoming Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPGs) during end-to-end testing at the U.S. Army’s Redstone Technical Test Center at Redstone Arsenal, Ala.

In successful end-to-end tests, the United Defense CICM system detected launched RPGs, tracked incoming rockets, launched its countermeasures and defeated RPGs before they reached the protected system.

"This successful counter-RPG mission was accomplished in less than nine months through targeted research and development efforts and rapid prototyping capabilities by United Defense and its teammates to quickly develop a successful, affordable near-term counter to RPGs," said Carl Sullinger, CICM Program Manager. "We expect to offer the CICM system to the U.S. military as a force protection measure for our fighting forces in combat while providing a fully compatible path with active defense suites for future systems."

I read something similar to that before, though it was more or less armor on a vehicle. Basically a capacitor is charged and there is a HUGE polarization between two armor plates so when an anti-vehicular projectile hits it, the polarized plates will find a connection and ZAP! away all of the armor-piercing charge before it penetrates.

Well, before you buy any stock, I need to point out that
my remark was mostly in jest. Unless I'm mistaken, most
shoulder-launched, mortar and artillery projectiles are
designed so that the warhead is not armed until some
time/distance after clearing the tube.

But certainly, given the short engagement ranges of RPGs,
if this system can detect one in time to thwart the
shaped charge, then it could perhaps be coupled to a
weapon that would simultaneously deliver counter-fire
toward the computed point of launch.

It's been done. No point doing 100K of 'em tho, because
even a stupid enemy catches on pretty quickly, and learns
to read and verify the armory marks on the cartons.

... do have to wonder about some of those Pali "work
accidents" tho ...

Nope, more like the classic bazooka.

A Rocket Propelled Grenade is just that, although I
suspect that most use shaped-charge warhead rather than
a traditional fragmentation warhead. They are also short-
range and unguided (other than the initial optical sighting).

A stinger is a long range (miles) guided missile with a
terminal (target) homing capability. Warhead is probably
frag, but I've already told you more than I know :-)
