ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- North Carolina Department of transportation crews are working to reopen Interstate 40 and more than 215 primary and secondary roads due to mudslides, downed trees, and high water in the western region of the state.
I-40 is currently restricted in both directions between mile markers 67-72 due to a mudslide on Old Fort Mountain.
One lane is open in each direction, but traffic is moving very slowly through the area.
NCDOT crews are hoping to reopen the road by Thursday morning.
The worst conditions are found in counties surrounding the Asheville area and along the Tennessee state line, including and south of the Boone area.
Conditions are expected to continue well into Wednesday and beyond. Motorists are advised to avoid traveling in these areas.
I suspect we'll be seeing a lot of this in WVA and Ohio as the night progresses.

In my backyard in southern Gaston County, we had 3.99" through this morning.
Parts of I-26 from the SC border into Asheville are also closed. Although not as bad, we have a few roads closed here in upstate SC as well. One just a mile away from my home is closed because of river taken a bridge.
Schools closed tomorrow here in Morganton with several roads closed and several bridges flooded. Still waiting fro runnoff from the mountains so the Catawba river may not yet have crested.
I wonder what the flood level was at Wilson Creek?
Yep, I am 25 miles north of Charlotte and 'dogs and cats' were raining on us all night.
I just crossed Winding Stair Gap it good to go.
The Natahala is Wild today
I don't know but channel 3 news showed the Caldwell county Sheriff's dept. on the scene. They probably haven't seen the worst of it yet either. Have you ever heard of the flood that wiped out the communities of Mortimer and Edgemont in the early 1900s?
We were vacationing in Waynesville, NC over the holiday weekend and the weather was perfect. We woke up to a steady rain on Monday morning as we packed and prepared to leave. Rain was with us until we got about twenty five miles north of Ashville on I 26, and the trip home to northern Virginia on I 81 was ok.
We got lucky, big time.
I had 8 1/4 inches here at my house near Asheville.
Let Constitution Day or Taxrelief know if you want on or off the NCPing list, or if you think you've been accidentally dropped, or ....
Haywood County got nailed pretty good from what I'm seeing on the local news.
Oops. Got a daughter in Rock Hill. I had better call
Yeah man, I bet the Natty is raging!
All the creekboaters are going gaga over this rain.
We got 11" over near Rosman. Schools closed due to the French Broad River overflowing it's banks. Check out our waterfall:
