US sheriffs visit Israel
Jerusalem Post ^ | Sep. 8, 2004

Forty United States sheriffs have arrived in Israel for courses aimed at improving US deployment against terror.

Delegates are scheduled to meet explosives and intelligence experts from the police, the Shin Bet and other security forces, as well as learning about the Israeli – Palestinian conflict.

Michael Brown – the chairman of the US Sheriff's union, which boasts 28,000 sheriffs nation-wide – said that the US attitude changed completely following the September 11 attacks, with the term "policing" being replaced by "internal security".

It's interesting in this post 9-11 world who we're turning to for help and advice. One little itty-bitty nation who has managed to survive terrorism for years.

Russian suicide bomb victims to be flown to Israel.

Which "US attitude" are we talking about? The folks I talk to are security conscience, but are leery of everyone with a uniform becoming "internal security".

Being vigilant is wise, becoming a police state is foolish.

We've been through this before when every badge was engaged in our "war on drugs". Seems that every small town had to have its own SWAT team no matter what the cost was or how often it was used, and every uniform was alert to drug usage.

At this point I get suspicious every time a badge gets itself involved in another "war". How much more equipment will they "need", and how much will it cost this time?

We've got a lot of good folks, from the CIA to the FBI, doing what they are best at. Does every small town really need its own private army? There's a place not far from me that has only two traffic lights on its streets, and a half-treaded vehicle in the police garage. So far its been used in local parades. One look at what the "war on drugs" taught us about greedy police departments is enough to imagine what they'll ask for this time.

These ominous words have apparently been written out of the revised version of this story. I wouldn't be surprised is it was at Sheriff Brown's request. These trips are bribery and corruption pure and simple, no more justified than lobbyist paid-for junkets to the Caribbean, to what end is difficult to say. Anything Barney Fife learns about internal securitying, I mean policing, at these junkets could just as well be learned from a pamphlet. The Sheriff Browns of this nation are foaming at the mouth for "internal security", we don't need to encourage their tendencies by sending them to a war zone to pick up tips on police work.
