How is Richard Burr doing against Bowles? Should Republicans be worried about this one?
What are the polls showing?
Roughly 48-40ish last I saw. I don't think there's anything really recent.
Burr had campaigned in Goldsboro only two weeks ago. He's been concentrating this month on all areas east of Interstate 95, "the part of the state where I'm known the least," he said.
Unfortunately NC is becoming a very liberal state in a lot of ways. High taxes, huge state guv and so on. Burr to date has been running a "can't we all get a long" type campaign.
He may get Zell to come here for him but then he would be overshadowed. Unless there are huge coat tails he won't win, IMHO
Guess he hasn't learned much from Jesse Helms. Maybe the response to Zell Miller will wake him up and get him running a more aggressive campaign.
I am encouraged that he's focusing on the eastern part of the state. If Burr isn't known there, that would go a long way toward explaining his consistent lag in the polls.
Isn't eastern Carolina conservative, Helms country?
the eastern part isnt really safe area for any republican today. still a lot of yellow dog dems here, but this thing with Zell may wake some up.
Yeah, but Bowles doesn't have Edwards' (boringly) pretty looks--that always is bound to be the deciding factor with some foolish, horny women.
W will win Carolina by 15 points. How are the same people going to vote for irksome? He could not even beat Liddy Dole, a nice lady but no fire brand campaigner. That was 9 points.
By the last day of Sept. the big race will be so over that the only action left will be the senate. When that comes about, money and people will pour into NC and SD to nail them down.
Let's see if frenchie is invited to campaign with irksome ( hee hee hee ) I'm pretty sure W will be campaigning in NC and SD.
I'd imagine an outside group will do most of his dirty work for him. Bowles' negatives were 29% in November 02 -- they were down to 19 last I checked, but my guess is a few hits and they'll pop back up. More important for Burr right now is to get his POSITIVE name ID up. More people know of him now but most are neutral toward him.
I don't think it's a coincidence that the Democrats have not won a Senate election in NC on a presidential election year since 1968. Bush's coattails should help Richard Burr, but he will win on his own merits.
The RNC should be in there with the full court press...maybe they are...but the GOP has to focus on winning all those Southern seats held by Dems.....Has Bush made any or plans to make any campaign stops/commericals with Burr?
North Carolina HAD become more liberal since the great migration of Yankees from their hell holes of New York and Massachusetts, caused by the tech explosion around Raleigh and the expansion of banking around Charlotte.
I, on the other hand, came for the better quality of life here in Charlotte, and I'm a republican.
However, this is changing as of late. I personally know of at least four people who changed their voter registration from dimwit to republican in the last week, and another three who switched within the last month.
There is a backlash against the Yankees here that is thick enough to cut with a knife, and that extends to their ideas of how things should be run. Esecially their politics.
Ask most 'heels just how Edwards became a senator and no one I know voted for him. Ask a 'heel how he/she feels about the rampant development caused by the influx of Yankees and they'll regale you with tales of the "old days" before the new carpetbaggers got here.
Ask what a 'heel thinks about some Yankees coming here and trying to turn Charlotte into Boston, and get ready for some real anger.
The problem, similar to that in New York, is that the urban centers (Raleigh and Charlotte in particular) still vote democrat out of habit or because they are now populated by the liberal refugees from up north.
I do not fear for North Carolina because, at the end of the day, (most) North Carolinians are sensible people. Erskine Bowles can depend on the "dependancy" vote and the vote fraud fo the illegals, but after that, he has work to do. And we know that democrats don't work, don't we?
One thing that I've never understood was why women wanted a good-looking guy in office. I mean, by way of anecdote, there were idiots all over the place who were talking about what a 'nice package' Gore had back in 2000 when he was on the cover of Newsweek. I don't hear about too many men who vote with their pants even when there is a pretty girl in the running--for example, Mary Carey (or whatever that porn star who ran for Cali gov called herself). No offense to any ladies here, mind you.
Burr's campaign has been much less visible than Ballantine's for governor, and Burr has more money. I hope he picks it up soon. Can't stand the thought of Bowels as my senator.
I really hope the Kerry campaign implodes soon, so Bush will have time to campaign in NC, CO, FL, SD, and AK to give our Senate candidates big bounces in the polls.
