You're right about the war winding down by '72. During the summer of '71 the Marines were pulled out (out of I corps) and replaced by Army. The air war cooled way down, the NVNAF lost too many assets and was hiding the assets that they still had. They didn't park a/c on the air bases; they hid them in caves.

Along came the '72 offensive and once again the NVA got their ass kicked; they were through. The Paris talks resumed and the situation in VN was pretty much a stalemate. Remnants of the VC still caused trouble in the south but they had never regained the strength they had once had and had lost during the '68 Tet offensive.

The final outcome was all political, thanks to Kerry and the VVAW and anti-US activists like Jane Fonda & Tom Hayden.

Your post is what would be helpful for media to share with today's Americans, instead of trying to smear one National Guardsman who has an honorable discharge.

I had a brother-in-law, a grad of the Naval Academy who was involuntarily extended after his 4 years were up. By the time he was released, so many pilots had gotten out ahead of him, that I know there was a glut of prospective airline pilots in the US.
