Peugeot-Citroen Has 'Stop and Start' Car 09.07.2004, 01:42 PM
PSA Peugeot Citroen SA will introduce an environmentally friendly car that shuts down its engine when the vehicle is stopped at a traffic light or in a traffic jam, the French car maker said Tuesday.
The car can cut fuel costs by up to 15 percent in urban driving with heavy congestion, Peugeot Citroen Chief Executive Jean-Martin Folz said. Carbon dioxide and particle emissions are reduced proportionately.
The "Stop & Start" system uses technology developed by French car parts company Valeo SA.
The car engine automatically goes into "sleep" mode when stopped and immediately wakes up when the brake pedal is released. A heavy-duty battery and sophisticated power management technology are required because the system requires more power than a normal car.
The system will first be offered in France on the Citroen C3, a small car for city driving, starting in October or November, Folz said.

The start-up cycle on engine is the most damaging to the machinery, or so I've read. They've created a car that will now wear out FASTER... This does NOT sound like a solution to me.
A new rifle that will automatically "go into surrender mode".
It is a miricle if a Peugeot starts in the first place. I would hate to have to pray for it to start at every red light.
The startup wear you describe can be largely mitigated by the use of a separate oil pump that bathes the bearings independent of crankshaft rotation.
Big deal, big gas golf carts.
The amazing part is that French cars were able to do half of this for years. Most French cars are very good at the shutting down but had trouble with the restarting part (Hey, Tedd DeL. -- Still have the C17?)
LOL!
Yay for the french, creating an obsolete car that's about as good as their aircraft carrier..
They just reinvented the gas-powered golf cart.
I wonder if they thought of that?
Crappy car from a crappy nation.
I think it has the same advantage, namely quiet when stopped, so as not to interfere with someone making a left turn.
Since it's a Peugot/Citroen, while it's surrendering to the road it needs to worry about being molested by Audi's, VW's, Porche's, and BMW's..
I heard it likes to retreat before going forward.
I used to have a car like that...unintentionally of course!
I hear ya, we had a peugot when i was a kid,
it was a miracle if it would start in the rain.
If you prayed when it was sunny it would just maybe start. ;)
The French are obviously stealing our black projects trade secrets.
Sales of replacement engine parts should be increasing soon.
