Peugeot-Citroen Has 'Stop and Start' Car 09.07.2004, 01:42 PM

PSA Peugeot Citroen SA will introduce an environmentally friendly car that shuts down its engine when the vehicle is stopped at a traffic light or in a traffic jam, the French car maker said Tuesday.

The car can cut fuel costs by up to 15 percent in urban driving with heavy congestion, Peugeot Citroen Chief Executive Jean-Martin Folz said. Carbon dioxide and particle emissions are reduced proportionately.

The "Stop & Start" system uses technology developed by French car parts company Valeo SA.

The car engine automatically goes into "sleep" mode when stopped and immediately wakes up when the brake pedal is released. A heavy-duty battery and sophisticated power management technology are required because the system requires more power than a normal car.

The system will first be offered in France on the Citroen C3, a small car for city driving, starting in October or November, Folz said.

Yay for the french, creating an obsolete car that's about as good as their aircraft carrier..,

I agree. I heard that their newest aircraft carrier, the Charles DeGauule lost a prop on its shakedown voyage; and the flight deck is 30 meters too short. Don't you just love French engineering?

My experience with Citreons has been that they stop all the time anyway.

Sounds really really shakey!
surprising though that Honda didn't come up with this idea first.

I remember having to use my boss's Citroen back in the '60's.

Like driving a boat.

Welcome to the year 1998, France!

Sounds like the hybrid concept, but probably with an even uglier Peugeot-Citroen look to it.

Back in the 70's I knew a guy that bought a Citroen because of the cool looks and features. The adjustable suspension never worked right and it was in the shop constantly for repairs. The guy said he would never buy a French car ever again.

I'm more impressed with the Dodge 5.7 HEMI Engine that shuts down 4 of the 8 cylinders while cruising at highway speed... and opens them back up when you accelerate.

Peugeot Citroen Chief Executive Jean-Martin Folz told reporters, "You can get the car in any color, as long as it is yellow." Suddenly ending the press conference, Folz blew a snot rocket at the befuddled assembly of reporters.

Though actually, French weapons are pretty good -- as are Belgian firearms -- the Belgian FN-FAL rifles are superb.

The "wear" from stop and starting engines is due to the lack of OIL on in the engine it first starts... given the fact that most of the stop and starting are going to be short term (stop light) the engine should be well lubricated from the oil last pumped through it still.

In the longer term, say a traffic jam, turning your car off rather than idling it while sitting still in the heat if you are going to be there for 10 or 20 or more minutes is better to do anyway.

My Honda Insight does this, but it uses the 144 volt electric drive motor to start the car. It doesn't "crank". It sound like it starts in less than a one revolution. It does the same thing starting cold. There's a backup starter and conventional battery.

For what it's worth, the Toyota Prius does the same--except it has the electric motor to propel the car until the engine starts up again.

The startup wear you describe can be largely mitigated by the use of a separate oil pump....

It uses an "accumulator" like aircraft. A vessel that stores liquid or vapor under pressure, not unlike a battery that stores "electricity". The French engine still won't work, regardless of all the efforts to mitigate its shortcomings.
