It was 6 a.m. when Russian soldiers hoisted themselves over the wall, crashed through the window, and broke down the front door......Altogether, an estimated 40 family members of senior Chechen rebel leaders were assembled at Khankala from Thursday, a day after the hostage seizure in Beslan, until Saturday, the day after it ended.
Semiyev's daughter, Kusama, is the wife of Chechen separatist leader Aslan Maskhadov. Around him were suddenly assembled the entire extended families of Maskhadov, the former Chechen president, and of Chechen warlords Shamil Basayev and Doku Umarov. Maskhadov's brother was in the tent where the men were kept, and in a nearby building with the women and children, his elderly sister. A 5-month-old baby proved to be a distant relative of one of the rebel leaders.

Maskhadov's spokesman in London, Akhmad Zakayev, said ''They were following the standard practice developed almost a century ago by the Bolsheviks and carried on by Stalin, who believed that every single act of terror should be responded to by an even bigger, more horrendous, more terrifying terrorist act," Zakayev said. ''According to this practice, it is necessary to shock terrorists, and let them know that under no condition will you agree to negotiate with them."

''There were people making very frightening comments about us [the family detainees] like, 'They should be turned into ashtrays.' I don't know what turning a person into an ashtray means, but it sounds very menacing," Abdul-Kadyrova said.

No matter which side someone is on, only evil people torture children, even in revenge.. It's really easy to pick out the bad guys here.
it's easy for some, but some just aren't able to see anyone as a "bad guy"
instilling fear for their own families into Islamic "warriors" is a great idea and something they already understand.......I'm all for it!
Hogwash.
But the arrest of the rebel leaders' families also drew a negative reaction, especially since at least two family members suffered broken bones and several others severe bruises from being beaten and kicked. ''They just nabbed some elderly grannies. What did they have to do with either the field commanders here or the hostages in Beslan?"
Oh, boo hoo! A bloody nose is nothing compared to making children drink their own urine, running them through and blowing their bodies apart where their families may never find them for burial.
Naaaaaa....
They're just misunderstood. If we would just listen to them and do everything they say, they would like us and we would all stand on a hill and sing "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing," just like in that Coke-a-cola ad in the '70s.
Too bad they didn't rub them down in pig grease before releasing them.
..while they slept. how do you sleep after being involved in killing children?
Boston Globe / LA Times will always shed tears for terrorists, never for their victims.
Cry me a river.
The "suffering" of Mashkadov and Besayev's extended families being taken captive by the Russians will never remotely approach the scope or depth of the suffering perpetrated upon the people in Beslan.
They will be fed.
They will be given water.
They just won't be free to do what they want until Besayev and Mashkadov surrender themselves.
I don't have a problem with this.
The media's focus on what the Russian government did or didn't do is appalling.
I assume you are referring to John Kerry's proposal for a more "sensitive" war on terror.
The media isn't the message, it's part of the enemy.
You beat me to it.....that's what I was gonna say.
No. I was referring to the media's view of how to deal with terrorists.
Kerry's sensitive "war on terror" would probably consist of fervently apologizing to the terrorists for anything we have done to make them angry, promising not to do it again, and then begging for mercy as he licks their sandals.
The Israelis have gone as far as bulldozing the houses of terrorist's families, and that's had a small effect on terrorism in the area.
It seems terrorists value their family, and any act to endanger their families or property, makes them stop and think. The Russians seem to understand this.
The question is: what will America's response be to terrorism when all of the liberal "outreaching", and "apologizing", no longer has the ability to stop the terrorist's killing of our people?
Historically soldiers don't go after an enemy's family because the enemy will do the same thing. But, in the case of terrorists the American family is the prime target. Because of the American military code against involving noncombatants in combat the terrorists feel their own families to be perfectly safe. This may change if enough blood is spilled on American soil.
My liberal cousin in Atlanta equated the killings of the children with the torture of the prisoners in Abu Ghrab.
There's no getting to the Kerry mind, or past the hatred of Bush.
From the sounds of this article, they were all released on Sat.
Good thing CindyDawg doesn't live in Chechnya. Muslims hate dogs and consider them filthy animals.
The problem I see is that the Russians have already let them go...
