I think Al Sistani is pulling strings to bring Iraq to a peaceful state. He probably recognizes that peace at the hands of the coalition will taint Iraqi sovereignty in the minds of the extremists and those who sympathize with them.

But if the Iraqi people demand that those who would wage a needless war on the Iraqi people be stopped, then peace will come at the will of the people, and therefore lend credibility and support for the interim government, the coalition, and the reconstruction.

Just call me unduly hopeful that someone over there as developed some common sense to work toward a popular peace movement, in the interests of a long term Iraq.

This is encouraging. It's amazing what power there is in freedom.

Encouraging news. My prayers that these demonstrations will grow each day, and take place whereever the terrorists are operating in Iraq.

That's nice to hear. Al-Sadr take notice of what is going on in Najaf.

I do recall reading Al Sistani came out in favor of a secular government. From what I've read it appears that his main goal is to make sure that the Shia DON'T get the shaft in the new Iraq.
