I think you'll find it all comes from being sent to boarding school. This man was probably entrusted at the age of 8 to the care of some institution staffed by cane wielding sadists where early morning freezing showers and regular beatings were standard proceedure.
Funnily enough though, I think you'll find the Krauts are even worse than us!
