EU wants explanation from Moscow on hostage storming

03 September 2004 = = The EU refused Friday to rush to judgment on how Russian authorities acted in the bloody end to the hostage crisis in north Ossetia, but said it wants Moscow's explanation of the tragedy.

"It is premature now, without knowing the exact situation, to make a judgment on the way the Russian authorities acted," said Dutch Foreign Minister Bernard Bot, whose country currently holds the European Unionpresidency.

"We first have to evaluate the situation with the knowledge of all the details," he told reporters at the end of the first day of a two-day meeting of EU foreign ministers in the southern Netherlands.

But in a later statement Friday evening Bot said the EU will be seeking an explanation from Moscow.

"All countries in the world need to work together to prevent tragedies like this. But we also would like to know from the Russian authorities how this tragedy could have happened."

The comments came after around 100 were killed and over 550 injured as crack troops stormed a school in southern Russia, freeing children and adults held hostage for almost three days by militants demanding independence for Chechnya.

Earlier in the day Bot called the denouement of the hostage crisis in the town of Beslan a "deep human tragedy" and said it appeared that authorities "considered very carefully this situation before deciding to take this action."

Speaking following afternoon talks, he added that "as figures are coming in it turns out that the drama is even greater than I thought."

He notably said that "perhaps at a later date" European leaders could discuss "with our Russian friends" the possibility of creating a joint anti-terrorism force.

"We should also eventually look into what has happened and discuss ... measures that can be taken to prevent such situations from occurring," he added.

Any judgment that needs to be made was already made on the ground by forces dealing with this terrorist attack. It was not a tragedy. It was a calculated terrorist attack. yOU DO NOT NEGOTIATE WITH SUICIDAL TERRORISTS. You wait for the right minute and then you kill them- each one you kill means that many more hostages live.
The EU is interfering in something that the EU has chosen to ignore.

Russia to Chechniya: Dig your graves, you are now going to be a wasteland.

I would prefer it if the Russkies hit the root of the problem -- nuke makkah and madinah

Russia to USA: "Where do we sign up to kick some terrorist tail with you, Tovareshch ?

The smart money says that the three terrorists the Russians captured alive will "die from their wounds" in a few days.

I think that the Brussels crowd is going to hear from Putin on this one!

I don't like the man, but at least he has the stones not to bargain with terrorists on his turf. He appears to have more testosterone than all of the EU commissioners combined.

It's really too bad his guys seem to suck so bad at this hostage rescue thing. Maybe we could offer them a little training, in exchange for something that we want. Perhaps basing rights on an airfield somewhere within tactical range of Peking.

Some more trivia - I believe the nation was also a creation of Woodrow Wilson, after the victory of WWI.

Correct. It was formed from four provinces of the erstwhile Austro-Hungarian empire -- Bohemia, Slovakia, Moravia and Ruthenia.

That's what I was thinking. EU has a lot of nerve. Probably they figure it'll play well in whacko Muslim homicide bomber circles. See, we wouldn't do anything nasty to you guys even if you hijacked a dozen schools. Go bomb somebody else.

the muslims OWN the EU.

not true. the bureaucrats and socialist politicians own the EU. they are unable to devote enough capital to defense and thus terrorists will continue to rip away at them, as they negotiate from a position of weakness.

Yeah, excellent point.

That's EXACLTY why they did that.

The EU will go to virtually any length to appease.

Look for Putin to get all the blame.

Maybe there are some peaceful Siberians who would like to settle in a newly depopulated Chechnya.

Might not be too hard to talk Putin into such a plan at this point.

Give the Euroweeweeweinies something to "question" and b*tch about, and, just maybe, pee their already soiled britches over.

"America and Russia united in war against the European Union. Isn't this in the Bible somewhere???"

Maybe Kerry is right about not pulling the troops of Europe, if we just have to send them back to kick pEU @55.

Has he been watching the ABC or NBC? I ask because, he too, sounds like an idiot talking head.

why can't you understand that the EUrinals are morally superior, intellectually the cream of the crop and they want to dictate to the world to adopt their views.
They have become sisified and only understand real determination and power just like their blood brothers, the Arabs.

The EU has gone to the dustbin of history, what a shame for such a beutiful place to be inhabited by A@@holes?

Let's get out of NATO and begin new alliances with Russia, China, Australia, Japan, great Britain (if they are so inclined) as well as any central European country that wants to join?

The World surely would be a safer place and the EUrinals would have to abandon their dreams of taking over the world because of their belief that they are truly still the "Master Race".

Tomorrow we are going to storm their bases, leadership and supporters. We are going to kill 1,000 of theirs for every one of our children who were killed. We are going to kill 750 of theirs for every child that was wounded. We are going to kill 500 of theirs for every child who they made part of this.

Better: invade Chechnya, put all the men in one set of concentration camps, the women in another set.

The men are relocated to build roads thru Siberia.

The women are put into Russian military brothels.

The children are re-distributed to Russian families willing to take them and raise them as Christians.

Tell the rest of the Muslim world the same happens to any country providing a haven for Islamoterrorists.

End of problem
