Soccer Star Mia Hamm Reportedly to Campaign for California Democrats
San Francisco Examiner ^ | Aug. 30, 2004 | P. J. Corkery

Posted on 09/03/2004 1:11:40 PM PDT by mountaineer

Mrs. Nomar Garciaparra -- that would be soccer star Mia Hamm -- was a military brat who grew up all over the USA, but California seems like home these days. Hubby is from Fontana and her dad lives here as well. She also has a political side. Look for her to add some of the glitter from her Olympics gold to fund-raisers for Golden State Democrats. They don't want her to contribute cash. They want her to show-up at those fund-raisers and draw soccer moms back onto the Democratic bench. ...

The writer doesn't name a source for this info, and none of the stories I found regarding her retirement mentioned an interest in politics, just in spending time with her family and possibly starting a family with new husband Nomar Garciaparra.

Hamm, who co-founded a foundation that supports bone marrow disease research and women's sports, will have a last hurrah on an exhibition tour of the United States starting in late September. "I'm happy to say I have no idea and that's excellent with me," she said of her long-term outlook. "Now I if I want to go for a run I can go for a run without having to worry about the time." No surprise here. Soccer is such a Democrat/Girlie-man sport.

How sad the reach of insidious liberalism to the unschooled and vulnerable.

As Laura Ingraham would say: "Shut up and Play Mia".

Note to Fairwell Tour.

Explain to Mia that going out for Dems won't help ticket sales

A few stories - like this one - about the U.S. team mention that Julie Foudy is interested in politics, without mentioning her political leanings.

Soccer is such a Democrat/Girlie-man sport

And a manly-girl sport as well ;)

(And yes, I know Mia is straight. ......married to Nomar).

Have to disagree with the criticism of Mia Hamm.

She was an amazing soccer player and gave us moms of soccer girls a lot of exciting games to watch.

She is retired after helping the USA win another Olympic Gold medal.

She has every right to support whomever she pleases.

After she divorced her Marine helicopter pilot.

There was an article on Hamm a while back in SI - her family is real lefty/borderline wacko. Dad was a liberal fighter pilot(!), mom would constantly remind the kids "you're no one special". It was kinda creepy - almost child abuse IMHO.

Oops, I take it back:

Foudy is retiring from international soccer after the Games and is unsure of her plans. Friends have suggested she run for political office someday, and she said the dream might be a subconscious signal to join Kerry's campaign. "I have a couple of friends working on his campaign," Foudy said. "Maybe that's a sign that's what I'm going to do after the Olympics." link

That being said, I wonder why P.J. Corkery didn't bother to quote any local Dem politicos about their supposed plans for Mia Hamm. I guess that would have too closely resembled actual reporting.

Do you see anyone around here claiming she doesn't have that right?

This would not surprise me a bit. She has been influenced by another teammate of hers (Julie Foudy) who is a NOW liberal. Hanging out with her has probably influenced her a lot.

I don't think anyone disagrees with that. After all, we're very pro-freedom here. We simply question her judgment.

Look for Kerry to rip the gold medal off from around her neck and to throw it over some nearby fence for press coverage.

A "soccer star"?

Isn't that like a "badminton star"? Yawn.
