McCain: Miller's attack on Kerry could hurt Bush

NEW YORK -- Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), who has pushed for more civility in this year's presidential race, is warning that the biting, angry attack on Sen. John Kerry by a fellow Democrat at the Republican National Convention on Wednesday night might harm President Bush's efforts to woo swing voters.

McCain said the keynote address by Sen. Zell Miller (D-Ga.) could prove as controversial as a speech by Patrick Buchanan at the 1992 GOP convention in Houston.

"I think it backfires," McCain said of Miller's rhetorical assault on Kerry. He added that it "makes Buchanan's speech look milquetoast."

McCain made his comments to reporters at a party he held after the convention's Wednesday session ended.

Buchanan's speech, in which he declared a "culture war" was under way in America, was thought by many Republicans to have hurt the re-election bid of Bush's father, then-President George H.W. Bush. The elder Bush lost the November vote to Democrat Bill Clinton.

I just turned off the TV when buchanan showed his ugly face on F&F - I'm now turning off mclame as well.

What a creep. He's just jealous that Bush can attract such support from Zell.

Was McVain upset when Senator Kennedy suggested the Iraq War was dreamed up in Texas to improve the President's popularity? I don't remember him complaining about that, or any other Democrap hyperbole.

I think what McCain said was a good thing. Look at the games Bush is playing with the Kerry campaign. The RATS and RAT Media love McCain and everytime they are convinced that he is looking to hurt Bush, He does his Lucy imitation and pulls the ball away from Kerry Brown.

Agreed, McCain is a RINO. He also knows what is expected of him. You cannot tell me that during his tour with Bush, there hasbn't been a strategy set up to lure the RATS into trap after trap.

The media is trying to morph Zell into buccannan.

That line McCain said is STRAIGHT from the DNC truth squad war room. CNN showed a story with McCaulif watching the Zell speech he said it was the most hatefilled speech ever and he asked one of the staffers if he had ever seen it before. The little staffer piped up, "Buccannan 1992, it matches".

and today the DNC talking point is spouted by the DNC's favorit useful idiot, McCain.

Zell must have reaaaaaaly hurt the sKerrys.

Buchanan's speech fell right into the trap of making Republicans look like the narrow-minded bigots that the leftwingers try to claim we are.

Buchanan's speech was excellent and not at all as you describe.

Quit recycling Democrat talking points from 1992.

McVain seems to want to sabotage his own President. There's just no honor when he tells reporters he thinks Senator Miller went overboard - and I guess Senatorial chuminess doesn't extend to the kind of Democrat McVain doesn't approve of? You're a hypocrite McVain, who makes good people sick. Maybe you should have stayed at home for all the good it did for you to appear on the President's behalf Monday night since we're wondering if your heart is four square on behalf of the President's re-election campaign. Sen. Miller is more of a gentleman than you'll ever be. Now do us all a favor and shut up and go home since you don't believe in free spech - you're no friend of liberty in America.

I heard him on Imus yesterday speaking like a man about to enter seminary...so concerned over Zell's harsh rhetoric...He protects Kerry fiercely and campaigns for Bush...I just cannot fathom what he is about...except headlines.

McCain is a waste of precious oxygen. Bush Sr. lost the election because consevatives could not vote for him, not because swing-voters were turned off by Buchanan's speech.

We desperately need to remove McCain from the GOP roster and insert Zell Miller, who actually does have principles.
