McCain: Miller's attack on Kerry could hurt Bush

NEW YORK -- Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), who has pushed for more civility in this year's presidential race, is warning that the biting, angry attack on Sen. John Kerry by a fellow Democrat at the Republican National Convention on Wednesday night might harm President Bush's efforts to woo swing voters.

McCain said the keynote address by Sen. Zell Miller (D-Ga.) could prove as controversial as a speech by Patrick Buchanan at the 1992 GOP convention in Houston.

"I think it backfires," McCain said of Miller's rhetorical assault on Kerry. He added that it "makes Buchanan's speech look milquetoast."

McCain made his comments to reporters at a party he held after the convention's Wednesday session ended.

Buchanan's speech, in which he declared a "culture war" was under way in America, was thought by many Republicans to have hurt the re-election bid of Bush's father, then-President George H.W. Bush. The elder Bush lost the November vote to Democrat Bill Clinton.

Maybe all it hurts are McCain's attempts to straddle both parties.

Ditto.

Have we become so wussy that the hearing the HARD TRUTH, backed by facts, can be twisted into something negative?

OH HOGWASH!

Zell Miller cleared the air for EVERY CONFUSED DEMOCRATS out there who dispises what the dem party has become and want to shout out against this hijacking by the immature crowd of 60's hippies who never grew up and to this day do not understand that freedom is NEVER free.

Good for Zell. No one could have said what HAD TO BE SAID about the dem party, in clearer terms, than a fellow democrat, a man who is NOT AFRAID of the DNC slime machine.

Which is more stupid? Saying Miller's speech hurt Bush, or comparing Miller to Buchanan? Too close to call.

It was full of fire and brimstone, that's for sure! But I seem to remember that Buchanan's speech was more about hating gays than criticizing the Democratic candidate.

Buchanan's speech fell right into the trap of making Republicans look like the narrow-minded bigots that the leftwingers try to claim we are.

Zell's speech wasn't about hate. It was pure, righteous anger. And it came from one of THEIR party, not some fringe Republican.

Gawd, this man's so self-important. I didn't see the speech live (watched it later), but a woman in my office who's totally a-political came flying up to me all excited about it.

I'm getting the impression people loved it.
