Will Zell Backfire on the GOP
CNN ^

Posted on 09/02/2004 6:23:58 PM PDT by MaineRepublic

From "Wolf Blitzer Reports" staff CNN Thursday, September 2, 2004 Posted: 5:26 PM EDT (2126 GMT) NEW YORK (CNN) -- Talking about his own party Thursday night, Democrat Zell Miller said, "Our nation is being torn apart and made weaker because of the Democrats' manic obsession to bring down our commander in chief." Talking about Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry, Miller said, "This is the man who wants to be the commander in chief of our U.S. Armed Forces? U.S. Forces armed with what? Spit balls?" Miller's keynote address to the Republican National Convention was a passionate and pointed attack. "Motivated more by partisan politics than by national security, today's Democratic leaders see America as an occupier, not a liberator. And nothing makes this Marine madder than someone calling American troops occupiers rather than liberators," Miller said. His remarks came in sharp contrast to earlier convention speeches from moderate Republicans like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Rudy Giuliani.

My boss (now, he is a conservative) said to me that it was "so great to finally see a politician say the truth and what he believes" and let the chips fall where they may.
I believe alot of folks are going to see Zell's speech that way. He didn't come off as a nut, or ridiculous hyperbole- he came off as someone "mad as hell and not gonna take it anymore". LOTS of folks can understand that.

The only time powerful statements backfire is when they are not true. Liberalism is a mental illness.

This tactic worked so well on the Pat Buchanan speech in '92 that the leftists are praying it will work again. Immediately after Buchanan's speech about the culture war in the US, it got a favorable response from viewers. However, the media went after it full tilt for several days, and now it is mythic as a terrible speech. They are hoping to change the great response of Zell's message the same way. The only problem is that now the US populace is not hanging on every word of the media. They are largely irrelevant now, but they are still giving it the old do-or-die try.

Yeah, the Swift Vets will backfire, blah blah blah.

If it truly was going to backfire, they'd be egging them on instead of trying to silence them.

Will Zell backfire? In their dreams.

Or, should I say - he's their worst nightmare!

I thought that Zell's speech was going to be directed to the Democrats across the country who feel betrayed by the left wing hijackers. He was going to give them sound reasons and logic and an emotional basis for voting for W. He would appeal to the conservative sides of those who vote Democratic after adding the various interest group messages and reaching a total plus some residual guilt.

He did in fact deliver the message, very plain and clear with sufficient emotional overtones. Several of his statements may have actually drawn blood. Reminisicent of the 1850's, the Senator from Gerogia called out the Senators from Massachuttes. Zell's message was an anguished cry to history to let future generations know that within the mass of Democrats there is at least one who can see the disaster looming if the leftists are allowed to regain control.

I expected the speech to be a permission slip to those who can't quite cut the ties to old Democrat allegiances and vote for a Republican. I expected an alter call.

I now realize the alter call was not a real possibility because all present were actually in the choir. I wonder though just how many Democrat souls in TV land were saved by Zell's speech. I suspect there are many

I so admire Zell Miller, that strong man who spoke truth to America last night!

He gave so many a voice, not just the Reagan Democrats, but all Americans who cherish this country and our way of life...

The only people even thinking along these lines are the media and the Kerry Campaign.

Not quite...you leave out al Qaeda, the Taliban, and the islamofascists that are rooting for Curry (as GHW Bush calls him).

Crissy Matthews is only tough when his opponents are small Asian women.

He can beat up every 5'2, 98lb woman on the block.
