If David Gergen was enraged, then I'm a happy camper.
I'd say Gergen is a Benedict Arnold.
He doesn't want one. He wants to retire. Again.
He served as governor of Georgia and had retired to the mountains of North Georgia; he may still teach history at Young Harris, but as I don't live in Georgia any more I can't be sure.
He only came out of retirement when the governor of Georgia requested that he fill the Senate seat of Paul Coverdell after Coverdell passed away.
And it was at that point that he saw what was going on and started getting really angry at where the national party had gone...
And, as an ex-Georgian let me tell you: don't let those ignorant comparisons the national media is making of Zell = Lester Maddox fool you.
Behind all the segregationist stereotypes (ax handles and the like, which Maddox played to the hilt for votes and profit!), the fact is, that when Maddox was governor, he did more to help blacks than any other governor in the state's history.
If they're dredging up these tropes he really got to them! Funny how they never mention the racist past of Robert Byrd.
I guess Zell Millar made a great speech the liberals are attacking him. Thats a sure sign he hurt them.

Brief Biography of Georgia Governor Zell Miller
According to The Almanac of American Politics, "Few [U.S. state] governors have played as pivotal a role in national politics or have sounded as loud a clarion call of regional leadership as Zell Miller of Georgia."
Zell Miller is a product of the Appalachian Mountains. Born in the small town of Young Harris, Governor Miller has been a businessman, teacher, marine sergeant, and author of four books.
Governor Miller has held positions as a professor at four colleges and universities. His public career includes service at virtually every level of government. Before being elected as Governor of Georgia in 1990, he served as mayor, as a member of the Georgia Senate, and as Lieutenant Governor.
Since taking office in 1991, Miller's love of teaching and commitment to education have resulted in one of the most ambitious agendas to improve public education in this century.
Governor Miller's HOPE Scholarship Program has been called the most far-reaching in the nation by The Los Angeles Times. His pre-kindergarten program is the only one in the nation available to all four-year-olds. Recently, some news pundits have called Governor Miller "America's education governor," and until recently stating that he would serve out his term as Georgia's chief executive, Miller was rumored to be President Clinton's choice as U.S. Secretary of Education if Clinton is reelected to a second term.
While raising state spending on education to new highs, Governor Miller at the same time as cut taxes more than any other chief executive in the state's history. I hear Zell Miller was in a club that had only 100 members and one of those members was a grand kegel of the KKK a man named Robert Byrd.
Zell has struck a truth nerve with the Dems. The more BS they put out there, the more you can tell how deep a strike he made.

Lester Maddox was a segregationist...then he was a governor. Lester was never a "segregationist governor". In fact he ran one of the most populist statehouses in recent memory. Also, the Ga Lt Governor does not "serve under" the Governor - they're elected seperately and the Lt Gov presides over the State Senate. In fact the current Lt Gov is a Dem., while the Governor is a Repub.
So did Susan Estrich. That's the new talking point. Gergen is such a fellow traveler.
Ya gotta admit that the demoncRATS are gnashing their teeth because their efforts to stall Zell Miller's rousing spectacular speech have not succeeded one iota. (I listened to various demoncRATS this a.m. on Fox when they were interviewed. Sour grapes attitude if not outright lies and name calling poor Zell.) Compared to Ron Reagan's presence at the DNC convention, Miller's outstanding presence more than overshadowed any effect that Reagan had. Hehehehehe!

Whoever has the votes makes all the difference to a politician.
I interviewed both Lester Maddox and Zell Miller. They both share a pretty intense dislike of Jimmy Carter. A lot of people who worked with "Jimmah" feel that way. Not exactly the "Saint Jimmy" persona he likes everyone to believe, but mean-spirited, hateful, and bitter.
And let's not forget our "first black president's" mentors, Orville Faubus and (probably his daddy, too) J. William Fullbright. Neither exactly card-carrying members of the NAACP.
