Lester Maddox was a segregationist...then he was a governor. Lester was never a "segregationist governor". In fact he ran one of the most populist statehouses in recent memory. Also, the Ga Lt Governor does not "serve under" the Governor - they're elected seperately and the Lt Gov presides over the State Senate. In fact the current Lt Gov is a Dem., while the Governor is a Repub.

No one under 50 years old knows who Lester is in Ga. much less the rest of the nation.For a segregationist he sure got a lot of black votes.

While they don't run as a ticket, Lester Maddox got Jimmy Carter elected. I was there. Maddox was Carter's Lieutenant Governor.
