Zell and Lester Maddox: Don't Forget Jimmy
Posted on 09/02/2004 1:46:09 PM PDT by The Great Yazoo
Indeed, an enraged David Gergen dared to compare Miller to Lester Maddox, the segregationist governor for whom Miller worked more than 40 years ago. Gergen said Maddox was "a man of hate," and that Miller was "a man of hate" too. John Podhoretz in New York Post
I mean, he [Zell Miller] came to prominence, you recall, as the chief of staff to Lester Maddox, the last segregationist governor of Georgia. Mark Shields on NewsHour

Did Gergen rage at Miller when he was Clinton's keynote speaker in '92 at the dem convention.

No one under 50 years old knows who Lester is in Ga. much less the rest of the nation. For a segregationist he sure got a lot of black votes.

Hello, they didn't mind when Zell stumped for Clintoon in '92. He didn't just stump for Clinton in '92; he was the keynote speaker for the '92 DemocRAT convention.

While they don't run as a ticket, Lester Maddox got Jimmy Carter elected. I was there. Maddox was Carter's Lieutenant Governor.

Lester hated Jimmuh....and vice versa. How do you figure he got Carter elected?
To: GeorgiaDawg
My only personal experience with Carter was when a group of us (high school) were singing Christmas carols while he was governor. And, being naive, we went to the Governor's Mansion.
The State Patrolman at the gate phoned up to the house, and he was directed to let us through.
Jimmy and Rosalynn came to the door and we sang a couple of Christmas carols for them.
They thanked us for singing for them, and apologized for the fact that Amy was already in bed.
Abysmal presidency, though.
Penultimate example of the Peter Principle in action.

You're confusing Kleagle with Kegel.
And I'm CERTAINLY not going to explain the difference between the two HERE.

Maddox campaigned hard for Carter (at least in South Georgia where I lived). Hatred came later.

Carter was a lousy Governor, too. The Atlanta newspapers didn't say so in 1976, but he was.

I grew up in South Georgia during that time, and had Lester campaigned for Carter there, he'd have been tarred and feathered.

Any Leftist outrage over Zell Miller rings hollow so long as they support Robert KKK Byrd, a man who has an embarrassing habit of using the word "nigger" in his public remarks. (But, of course, the Leftist media won't make a stink about it because Byrd is...[drumroll]...a Democrat.)

Lester Maddox was a good Governor. Even many of his enemies admitted it later.
I recall an article in the Urinal Constipation a few years ago by one of his politcal opponents,(can't remember his name), who said Maddox was one of the best Governors the state ever had.

Not exactly the "Saint Jimmy" persona he likes everyone to believe, but mean-spirited, hateful, and bitter A good friend of mine who is a yellow dog demo came away with the same experience after having to work with Carter at the Atlanta food bank. Never had another kind word for him again. Phoney was the nicest thing he said.

Because Georgia s governors weren't allowed to succeed themselves in those day, Maddox ran for lieutenant governor in 1970 and won easily. With his support, Jimmy Carter was elected governor and, not long after, began planning a bid for the White House in '76.

I'd say Gergen is a Benedict Arnold. And I'm sure the Democraps feel the same about Zell.

Me too. Remember that it's gergen who's injecting race into this. The topic of Zell Miller's speech has nothing to do with race. gergen's a race-baiter.
