Everyone here is focused on the potential of a switch at the top. It seems to me that the more likely switchero is position 2. What if Edwards suddenly becomes unavailable? Let's say from an unexpected _____ or _____. (you can fill in the blanks from recent political history).

Then, the Dems appoint Hillary. If they win great, wonderful, and Kerry's continual breathing then becomes interesting. If not, she is better positioned for 2008.

This would require John Kerry to concede that he can't win. He not only thinks he will win, he thinks he's entitled to be president. I just don't see him dropping out. I think it's pretty obvious, given their lack of campaigning for the Dem nominee, the Clintons are betting against Kerry. But I think they're gearing her up for the 2008 race not as a "pop-in" candidate in 2004. Granted a short campaign cycle helps her greatly, but I just don't see Kerry going quietly into that good night. The best case scenario for them is if Kerry has a Ron Brown or JFK Jr. type accident.

and he's doing a good job of it. He ignored 20 years in office and built his campaign on a 4-month period (which happened 30 some years ago) which he himself disowned and his recollection thereof is, um, faltering. At least Hillary spent 8 years in the White House recently - now that's something Democrats can get excited about.

Could they legally pull a "Torricelli Switcheroo"??

Not with those legs.

Yes, after Kerry's withdrawal she "won't have time to prepare", and besides, "America will be sick of all the negativity".

She will do a three week "listening to America" gig from NBC studios in NY hosted by Katie, Barbara, and Oprah, reviewing a procession of pathetic losers whining about not getting enough free sh*t or enough of someone elses money.

I don't think she has determined the method of Kerry's departure yet-hopefully his SS detail is on their toes.

Kind of an interesting conspiracy theory - that Clinton will replace Kerry. I would discount it as absurd except for the fact that Ashcroft got beaten in the election for senate a few years back by a dead man, whose wife stepped up to the plate. Perhaps this fact would embolden the notion of a last minute switch.

Actually, she was registered before the last presidential election for 2004. She has always kept her options open.

So, even if she did, how does she get on the ballots of the various states?

They would "Lautenbergize" her onto the ballots...

Yes, but the Clintons have a knack for accelerating people's "ends" when it suits them.....

If Kerry drops out, someone's gotta fill in. Who better?

Hillary would be a godsend, just like Kerry. Gore would be a formidable opponent. I still expect the Dems to trot him out for a rematch, somehow.

She may be drafted if Kerry tanks but I do not believe there are large enough numbers of women who would vote for her and there are a huge number of male Democrats who would rather vote for Ralph Nader than The Shrill One.

There were a hundred posts just like yours when Torricelli was looking to drop out of the NJ Senate race. "The Dems made their choice," "it's against the law," "it's unprecedented," "the courts will never accept it," etc.

I certainly don't believe it will happen here, barring, as you say, a tragedy. But never say it can't happen here.

The method of departure will be blackmail or extortion (bullets can be so messy) - she does have 900 FBI files at her disposal.

This is all so Eva Peron, but I love a good conspiracy theory.
