Fineman agreed w/R. Reagan about the supposed symbolism of "the pile." They're looking for something to criticize because this convention is so much more effective and exhillirating than the borrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrring dem convention which was ALL about Kerry.

How stupid is Chris Matthews? Let me count the ways...
He's demanding of Alan Simpson to explain what exactly Zell Miller meant by saying the military protects the freedom, not journalists (I'd need to see the quote, but wasn't it "of" journalists?).
Matthews seemed quite taken aback at this concept and Simpson in his country way explains it was a quote from the WWII memorial. This stuns Chris who apologizes for "making fun of it". Simpson had chastised him for mocking it and tried to explain the idea (defense so we can exercise our freedoms).
Now some hubbub and Simpson makes a comment about the crowd and Chris says "what do you mean? they've been nice" and Simpson turns and gestures and says "This one called me a murderer..." and the guy shouts back "Because you ARE" and a female calls out "LIAR". They really start to jeer and Chris goes "Well this is the free part of New York".
Good grief.
Simpson is explaining there are questions about Kerry's purple hearts! Simpson is a vet. The crowd hisses and boos. Simpson says it's hard for a country guy like me to understand how a guy gets 3 purple hearts in 4 months.
Matthews can't believe it and says don't you know him?? Simpson says yes, he seems like a good egg, I know Teresa.
Chris says: This is what I don't understand. Why raise this then?
I could smack his smug face. Chris spent months and months with his Scooter obsession and let the most vile charges be made against GWB, and then would claim once in awhile that he really likes GWB.
Simpson ended with he meant just what he said. Crowd boooooooos, segment ends and crowd is chanting KERRY KERRY KERRY as they go to break.
The chanting of Kerry's name was a good thing. Make clear he and they are as one.
