UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - President Bush (news - web sites)'s ambassador to the United Nations (news - web sites) defended the world body on Wednesday, after California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (news - web sites) said the United States, not the U.N., was best for democracy.
Schwarzenegger electrified the Republican National Convention on Tuesday evening with a speech blending quips from his movie-star past with somber stories about his immigrant struggles.
At one point, seeking to define the beliefs of his political party, he stated, "If you believe this country, not the United Nations, is the best hope for democracy, then you are a Republican."
Asked about the comment, Ambassador John Danforth, a former Republican U.S. senator from Missouri and an Episcopal minister, told reporters the United States was "a bastion of democracy and is a great beacon for the world."
"But working through the U.N. and working with other countries and working on a multilateral basis is clearly the strategy that we have in our country and it is very important," Danforth said.
The Bush administration and the United Nations have been at loggerheads since the U.N. Security Council declined to give Bush a green light to invade Iraq (news - web sites). But Bush has more recently praised the U.N. after it helped install an Iraqi interim government.
Gag me with a spoon.
UN crapper Ping!
Isn't it kind of funny that Ahnold, the guy everyone calls a RINO, is the only Republican who over spoke distastefully about the UN at a Convention?
Heaven forfend that the truth about the U.N. should actually be stated in plain terms. Leave it to the ambassadors to kiss the butt of the very organization that does nothing but defend tinpot dictators and Islamofascists.
That is noteworthy. I personally didn't vote for the guy, but I was duly impressed with what he had to say last night.
Danforth is in error. He should repent of this.
Pretty tepid defense of the U.N. Although for Danforth that may be a passionate defense.
VP Cheney lobbed a bomb at them tonight also via John Kerry.
Might he be required to put a monkey tail on his suit while attending UN sessions, as a condition of keeping his job?
I guess people can't stand the truth.
Arnold said the unvarnished truth.
Someone gag Danforth with a shovel and ship him back to Missouri.
Here, as so often with his appointees, Bush reaps what he sows. Danforth is a classic country-club Republican, a
don't-rock-the-boat guy. If you play with these people,
as Bush does, you can expect them to be themselves, not
your loyal subordinates. Danforth is just being who he
is. If the Bush people didn't foresee things of this type,
or didn't care, they had it coming.
No kidding. And the two Democrats who spoke, Ron Silver and Zell Miller, were the angriest people at the podium!
Bush can lick Kofis butt for all I care. If Bush is Pro UN, then I am anti Bush
