Growing Group of Comedians Veer Right
Fox News ^ | September 01, 2004 | Catherine Donaldson-Evans

Comedians always seem to think they're right. And one small but growing group is right — politically speaking.

Though a lot of comics and entertainers have lately been taking potshots at the president and the war he waged in Iraq, a number of right-leaning, conservative comedians have found their voices and started talking back.

A group of conservative comics billing themselves as The Right Stuff have been traveling around the country and are in New York this week to get laughs out of Republican delegates at the convention.

Another of the new breed is Brad Stine, a politically conservative Christian who weaves both elements of his value system into his act.

"I'm a conservative comedian — one of two known to exist in the Western hemisphere," Stine deadpanned in a phone interview. "I'm very pro-America, very patriotic. I use my time on stage to say how great the country is as opposed to saying how bad it is."

Entertainers like Stine and those in the Right Stuff troupe are capitalizing on the upsurge in the "God Bless America" sentiment that swelled with the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

"It's 'in' right now to be pro-U.S.," said psychologist Steven M. Sultanoff, the former president of the Association for Applied and Therapeutic Humor. "There's been a resurgence of a lot of basic family values. That's become the politically 'in' thing — a return to conservatism."

Stine, for his part, did the struggling Hollywood comedian routine before moving to Nashville (the "Christian Hollywood," as he calls it) and booking shows for the Promise Keepers and other primarily Christian audiences.

The targets of his jokes are the cast of characters you might expect: atheists, animal rights activists, the politically correct, "fanatical left-leaners," gun control advocates, divorcees and, yes, France — but Stine means

He must only be conservative on the days you watch, because every time I turn him on and try to listen to him, he's as liberal as they come.

I wish there was a list of conservative comedians.

I am fiscally conservative.

I am also libertarian in matters of education, eviromental issues, regulation, gun control and the over function of Government in domestic issues.

I am for borders and am a hawk.

I have voted Libertarian and Republican.

Labels just don't fit, the question is - who will you vote for on Nov. 2.

Outreach Comedy Offers Top-Quality Comic Talent, Performers Faithful to Christ, along with Event Planning & Promotional Tools

VISTA, CA – One of the greatest outreach challenges facing Christian churches today is finding invite-able events that appeal to a diverse audience. Recent studies show that our culture is becoming more fragmented, increasingly difficult to reach, and Christians are becoming less evangelistic. As indicated in a recent Barna research study “the nation is splintering into increasingly smaller, sharply defined and diverse segments” (6/23/03). This facilitates the problem that “ministry strategies that may have worked in years past have less relevance and appeal to growing proportions of the American population” (6/23/03). This uphill battle to find common ground, coupled with the findings from another Barna study on evangelism indicates a major hurdle for church outreach…“slightly less than one out of every four adults (23%) who attend a Protestant or Catholic church are both born again in their faith and have shared their faith in Jesus Christ with a non-Christian in the past twelve months” (7/28/03). Outreach is a greater challenge than ever before. Not only do churches need more culturally relevant outreach strategies, but believers need invite-able outreach opportunities in addition to evangelistic motivation.
Outreach Comedy offers a fresh and culturally relevant solution to reach a diverse audience with the message of Christ. Comedy events not only provide a fun and ‘invite-able’ event, but one that people will want to bring their unbelieving friends to. Outreach Comedy General Manager, Dionne Petitpas, states, “Outreach Comedy equips leaders to both reach the unchurched as well as edify believers in a unique and enjoyable way - by providing a host of top-quality, hilarious performers with an effective Christ-honoring message.” Combined with a bounty of communication resources to promote and plan these events, Outreach Comedy equips the church to not only fill seats, but provide an invite-able event everyone will want to attend. The Outreach Comedy motto: Make Them Laugh, Change Their Lives!

WHY COMEDY?
The power of comedy lies in the universal nature of humor. Everyone loves to laugh. And unlike more subjective mediums, comedy crosses generational, ethnic, gender and especially secular barriers. When people laugh together, they not only enjoy themselves, but they become more receptive to new ideas. Laughter opens the door to influential relationships, and comedy provides the perfect opportunity to edify believers and attract non-Christians. Laughter is a unique and effective tool for outreach, team building, and can be used as a strong asset in a variety of other events. Petitpas emphasizes, “This outreach strategy has worked for countless churches already. Comedy is a fun and effective tool to capture those hard-to-reach people in your community. We have heard time and again the success of comedy used for outreach events, fundraisers, and other such events—it’s an all-around crowd-pleaser.”

WHY OUTREACH COMEDY?
Outreach Comedy provides the perfect balance of a funny performance and a faithful message, plus equips event planners with planning and promotional resources. Outreach comedians are at the top of their game as some of country’s foremost comedians and have been featured in such venues and shows as: The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Late Night With David Letterman, Comedy Central, The Comedy Shop, Catch a Rising Star and on the Improv circuit. Outreach Comedy not only holds its performers to the highest professional standards, but also the highest personal standards. Each comedian must be a true example of the Christian faith both on-stage: with clean humor and a meaningful message, and off-stage: with genuine humility and integrity. The unique combination of top-quality talent, performers faithful to Christ, event planning, and promotional resources makes Outreach Comedy a fun, easy and comprehensive solution to your organization’s event needs.

Founded in 1996 and based in Vista, California, Outreach Inc is the nation’s leading provider of church marketing and communication resources. The mission of Outreach is to further the kingdom of God by helping Christian churches reach and impact their communities. Outreach Comedy it is now the newest link in the Outreach Inc chain of service, and supplies the church community with top-quality talent, performers faithful to Jesus Christ, and event planning and promotional resources.

Arnold Schwarzenegger is not a Conservative. He pointed out himself last night that there are many positions among Republicans. I think that is the mistake you are making. Schwarzenegger is a Republican (sort of), not a Conservative. I do not know where Quinn stands on the War on Drugs. I HAVE heard him make pro-drug USE referrences many times. He may have a Conservative stance on some issues that I am not aware of (I think he is big on defense), but he is definitely NOT a conservative himself.

Feel free to call yourself a Republican. You are not a Conservative. There is nothing wrong with this, but there is a BIG difference.

but if you are socially liberal and fiscally conservative you are probably a Libertarian.

An oft repeated but incorrect description.

(not to mention the capitalization problem)

You just identified yourself as opposed to Conservativism on 7 issues and in agreement on 3. The fact that you are not a Conservative does not make you a bad person, but you are not one.

Colin McNickle posted this joke in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, sourced to PA Congressman Curt Weldon:

The archbishop of Washington is offered $1,000 to say, in church, from the pulpit, that John Kerry is a saint. The day comes and the archbishop calls Mr. Kerry a lousy Catholic and, in fact, a liar. But next to Teddy Kennedy, "he's a saint."

A Conservative says they are for personal responsibility and fredom. A Libertarian means it. A Liberal HATES it.
