I still think it will curve a bit north than the track now. I do think it's odd that the predominate map has it going from a 4 (currently 140 mph winds) when it hits to a tropical depression (winds under 39 mph) in a 24 hr period. Is that normal?

From the last update:
HURRICANE FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO 80 MILES...130 KM... FROM THE CENTER...AND TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO 185 MILES...295 KM.
That is a diamiter of 370 miles, stay home.

I'm pretty sure under emergency conditions, the state suspends the collection of tolls on all toll roads. The Sunshine Skyway Bridge suspended tolls before and after Charley.

In my experience they peter out quickly over land, and from Category 4 to depression in 24 hours is a bit fast but conceivable. The source of energy for hurricanes is warm air saturated with moisture and the source for such air is a warm ocean. When cut off from that source by being over land - even relatively flat land like Florida - the storm looses its punch quickly. As Hugo among others proved, however, if a storm is moving quickly it can remain a hurricane well inland.

I don't live in Myrtle Beach, but I sure listen to the locals about hurricanes when I am there. A number of years ago (forgot which hurricane) the building where I have a condo lost one "stack" of units. The concrete and steel superstructure of the building held, but 13 floors of condos were simply blown out - nothing left but the framework of the building.

Don't forget that your hot water heater tank is another source of water! If you lose power, turn off the valve at the supply, turn off the breaker (yes, counter-intuitive but you never know when it might come back on), and you can draw water from the drain valve. It's a good idea to have some hose ready and to flush out the sediment now.
Also, put some plastic wrap over your tub drains and fill them with water. Have a bucket handy and you then have a supply with which to flush the toilets.

Hey guys and gals...It looks as if the EC is going to get this storm. That is evident. Where is the BIG question. If you are making preparations please remember one thing. There are elderly folks out there who may need your help BEFORE the storm approaches. Some of them don't have family nearby. You may be the one to make the difference in whether they survive or not.
One thing I heard this AM. If you used a generator after Charley now is a good time to change the oil. Another tip I have read is that scoopable cat litter in a bucket makes a good toilet in a pinch, if there's no water to be used for flushing. Also have on hand plenty of bug spray. If you plan on staying put, make sure you put on your shoes. As the storm approaches there may be glass broken and you don't want a nasty cut requiring stitches. Also, you can't stress the need to store water. A large clean thick contractor's trash bag will hold up to 55 gallons of water. Fill several of them.
I am just trying to think of the odd things that aren't normally mentioned. Hope it helps someone.

The Bahamas are going to be completely destroyed in less than 16 hrs...God Help Them.

The most important thing to look at besides track and wind speed...is the fact that IT WILL BE SITTING ON LAND FOR OVER 24 HOURS IN FLORIDA ALONE!!!!!!!!! Not a quick moving storm at all.

My elderly father and his wife (who has alzheimers) live in Orlando. They were w/o electricity for 7.5 days after Charley. Dad is hoping the hurricane will change course and go out to sea. One can hope.

True. And as Richmond learned with Gaston, slow or not moving is a big problem. Richmond got 12 inches of rain in 3-4 hours because of Gaston deciding to stay a while.
Just because you aren't on the coast, doesn't mean that you can't have serious damage from this girl!
