I thought the Bush twins speech was on target for the audience they were trying to reach --- 18-29 year olds (females, in particular). Their pop culture references seem to have gone over some people's heads here, but it's exactly what those folks understand -- the twins were speaking their language. They meant no disrespect for their grandmother Barbara with their Sex in the City joke --- the looks on their grandparents faces prove they knew it.

Anyway, this article's not that bad for the Slimes.

"For a coming-out party, the girls were notably underdressed:"

I'll bet you ten bucks that the NYT's never noted in print that the Kerry daughter's "coming-out" party in Cannes included wearing a totally see-through dress. TALK about underdressed!

I dunno. My wife is 25 and she was highly annoyed by the Bush daughters. She said (and I quote), "God! They sound like a couple of airheads!"

Now bear in mind that my wife is as Conservative and Republican as they come (she's the daughter of a U.S. Marine) and she thinks the world of the President and First Lady. The same goes for me, yet I have to agree with my wife. I thought the Bush daughters was a low point in the convention...a real let-down after Governor Schwarzenegger's say-it-loud-say-it-proud speech.

I missed it because I was on my way to work. Read the transcripts and didn't see anything to silly. A little cutsie but thats it. I think some folks are blowing this out of proportion.

Of course I'm biased. They are pretty darn cute ;)

I thought they were irreverent, fresh, energizing, and full of everything we all felt when we were twenty-one, and thought that we owned the world.

I'm glad they were there.

I've followed these threads and read all the criticism of the Bush twins, and it struck me that they call it the Grand OLD Party for a reason.

a sleeveless black dress with embroidered yolk.

How did they get the embroidery needle into the yolk without breaking it and getting it all over the rest of the dress?

Yoke. Y-O-K-E. I never even made it through college and I know the difference between a yolk and a yoke, for Pete’s sake!

Can I work for the New York Times now?

I think they missed the target and reached 14-17 year olds though.

Senator John Kerry's older daughter, Alexandra, briefly stole the show with at the Democratic convention in July. Ms. Kerry described a dad so devoted that he dove off a dock to save her pet hamster from drowning.

She "STOLE THE SHOW" with this story? Am I the only one who finds this pathetic? Must have been a pretty boring convention.

I agree with you.

I didn't see anything offensive with the Bush twins' speech. Cheesy perhaps, but offensive or bad, not at all.

Jenna and Barbara are basically the President's liasons to the MTV Rock the Vote generation. By keeping things lighthearted, they were able to connect with them, poke fun at themselves, and get a good dig in at Kerry.

The people who are taking this speech seriously on here miss the point and should lighten up. This is a speech that is aimed at undecided and soft Democrat or Republican voters in the 18-24 range and it was effective IMHO.

Either security at the convention is not what it is cracked up to be or the NY Times editors are not what they are cracked up to be. I think they meant "yoke."

Bush Twins Get a Little Payback in Prime Time

I wonder if they thought to bring out a couple of Chuy's margaritas and toast the press for being so nice to them and giving them so much privacy all through college. Now that's what I'd call payback.

I was embarrassed by their cultural references and MTV Awards style delivery and I'm by no means a prude. The only "interest" they got are from "red-blooded All-American boys" and I don't mean about voting.

Her outfit recalled the 1950's, which is exactly the soft of stereotypical old fashioned home-making, "woman's work" wife she has really been. I agree she seems sincere but Laura was simply dull and unwatchable. Zzz.

Amazing how people love her and hate Liz Dole who I've found a far better speaker historically. Speaking of Liddy, where were the Freepers who slam Liz as a liberal when she was delivering the pro-life message?

Those who were put off by the MTV-style delivery of the twins should get a grip. You were expecting a dissertation on world affairs? You wanted the standard beauty pageant civics lesson? These are 22-year old kids and that's exactly how they acted. I thought the hamster comment was the perfect antidote to the prattlings of the Kerry spawn, who are older and should have known better.

I saw the DNC convention. It's a very stark contrast between Teresa and Kerry's daughters and Laura and the twins. Night and day.

The presidents family is really a family. They are regular folks.

Seriously, I can't picture how the Kerry Klan functions - they are all so self absorbed pretentious snobs that probably can't stand to be under the same roof together. No wonder they need so many homes.

At least they are not advising the president on Nuclear War (Amy Carter), or trying to pass themselves off as experts on Stem Cell Research (Ron Reagan Jr.).

One of our local television stations filmed part of the rehearsal. The blonde twin said she was known as Barbara's revenge on Dubya. I don't recall hearing that line in the introduction last night.

The Bush's are a tight-knit bunch. You can safely bet that Grandpa and Grandma knew exactly what their granddaughters were going to say.

All I can say.....What a great family. So normal for being in such a bright spotlight for most of the time. I met Dodo Bush last Spring. She was so nice, friendly and approachable I half expected her to invite me over to the Maine compound for a BBQ.

My 40 something, apolitical wife is often my calibrator for apolitical pop culture. She thought the Bush twins were cute and funny last night. The only persons I saw offended by their short bit were stuffed shirt, talking heads.
