Bush Twins Get a Little Payback in Prime Time

By JODI WILGOREN

Published: September 1, 2004

Maybe girls do just want to have fun. The Bush girls, at least.

Forget four years of shunning the spotlight. President Bush's twin 22-year-olds, Jenna and Barbara, strutted into it last night with a sassy, sexy serenade to their parents at the Republican National Convention, every wisecracking word broadcast live on national television. They spared no one.

"She thinks 'Sex in the City' is something married people do, but never talk about," Jenna, the blonde, razzed her grandmother, Barbara Bush. Jenna was referring to the HBO program "Sex and the City."

Mrs. Bush's namesake, the brunette, said of her alma mater, "When your dad's a Republican and you to go to Yale, you learn to stand up for yourself."

And dear old dad?

Jenna Bush took Mr. Bush's words about his own youthful indiscretions as her punch line. "We kept trying to explain to Dad that when we were young and irresponsible," she said as Madison Square Garden erupted in cheers, "well, we were young and irresponsible."

For a coming-out party, the girls were notably underdressed: Jenna in a shiny brown jacket over white T-shirt and jeans, Barbara in a sleeveless black dress with embroidered yolk. But they embraced that aesthetic, seeking to fill any coolness gap their father might face with the MTV set by mentioning OutKast and even its lyrics.

Mr. Bush's daughters have slowly been emerging as public figures in recent months, occasionally appearing on the campaign trail. "Since we've graduated from college, we're looking around for something to do for the next few years," Jenna said by way of explanation on Tuesday night. "Kind of like Dad."

The twins' turn yesterday at the microphone, part of the introduction of Laura Bush, brought the first public words many had heard from their mouths.

Barbara Bush took the teeniest slap at the opposition, invoking the story Senator John Kerry's older daughter, Alexandra, briefly stole the show with at the Democratic convention in July. Ms. Kerry described a dad so devoted that he dove off a dock to save her pet hamster from drowning.

"We had a hamster too," Ms. Bush said last night. "Let's just say, ours didn't make it."

One of our local television stations filmed part of the rehearsal. The blonde twin said she was known as Barbara's revenge on Dubya. I don't recall hearing that line in the introduction last night.

Here is another thread talking about their speech. This one gives the impression that they were taunting the kerry daughters with heavy sarcasm.

Those who were put off by the MTV-style delivery of the twins should get a grip. You were expecting a dissertation on world affairs?

Remember when Chelsie decided to involve herself in world affairs? Remember how stupid she looked and sounded? These are 22 year old kids. They're acting their age. They're cute. They might have pulled in a couple of votes. They certainly didn't lose any.

>> They meant no disrespect for their grandmother Barbara with their Sex in the City joke --- the looks on their grandparents faces prove they knew it.

The Bush's are a tight-knit bunch. You can safely bet that Grandpa and Grandma knew exactly what their granddaughters were going to say.

I think the Sex and the City joke was based on when their father was asked about pop culture in 2000 during an interview with some reporter and she asked him if he knew what Sex and the City was and George W. Bush thought she was claiming he was unfaithful to Laura and the reporter had to tell him that it was a show. It was a bit risque and people not familiar with that will wonder why they brought up such, but I remember reading about that.

All I can say.....What a great family. So normal for being in such a bright spotlight for most of the time. I met Dodo Bush last Spring. She was so nice, friendly and approachable I half expected her to invite me over to the Maine compound for a BBQ.

'I think they missed the target and reached 14-17 year olds though.'

No, I am 14 and was embarresed for them. However, my 7 year old little brother found some of it hilarious (Although he didn't get the Sex in the City comment, thankfully.)

I agree with you, but not all of today's youth function at their age level.

My 40 something, apolitical wife is often my calibrator for apolitical pop culture. She thought the Bush twins were cute and funny last night. The only persons I saw offended by their short bit were stuffed shirt, talking heads.

If different youths function differently, can there really be said to be a set age level for how a youth functions?

Short answer, no, but it is possible to have realistic expectations.

Reagan's big tent included MODERATE Republicans and CONSERVATIVE Democrats.

Unlike the actions of some of today's Republicans, it was NOT an attempt to appeal to the Liberal left, and to forces within Planned Parenthood. Unfortunately, the modern day concept of the big tent is far too inclusive.

I said I was wavering toward Bush BECAUSE of his daughters.

If I continue to see the kind of narrowminded, inflexible, self important comments that also demonstrate a total lack of any sense of whimsy or humor, particularly on threads about the twins and Alan Keyes, that I see here,I won't be voting for Bush or Kerry.

Why support a party that is carrying out more covertly, practically the same agenda as the other party supports openly? The only reason to support them would be that there are fine, decent, confident persons within the party who still seem to have values, ideals, ideas, principals and unique personalities and are free to express them. And if they can present a new idea or a different but healthy image than maybe others will start seeing the llight.

However,if a great many in that party can't see the difference between style and substance in the few who actually act as individuals rather than automatons, and seek to squelch, stifle and dis them, then there is no hope there either and some of us might as well throw in the towel or grow a new party.

But even if you all lose some of us,there will be a lot of people who may have seen the twins and not seen the reaction of the party stalwarts(?)who will vote for Bush, because they recognized their genuineness and good natured approach to conventions, which at this point are silly and expensive exercises in rewarding the party faithful.

That is just plain silly. The election is more important than anonymous comments on a message board.

People should consider the truth in that old adage about the straw that broke the camel's back. At a certian point it kicks in and can appear to be nonsensical, silly or inane, but it is not,it's a reality.
