The Bush's are a tight-knit bunch. You can safely bet that Grandpa and Grandma knew exactly what their granddaughters were going to say.
I think the Sex and the City joke was based on when their father was asked about pop culture in 2000 during an interview with some reporter and she asked him if he knew what Sex and the City was and George W. Bush thought she was claiming he was unfaithful to Laura and the reporter had to tell him that it was a show. It was a bit risque and people not familiar with that will wonder why they brought up such, but I remember reading about that.
