They aren't shallow. For heaven's sake, one of them plans to teach underprivileged children in Harlem and one wants to help AIDS victims in Africa.

That's far from shallow. They are young and hip. There's nothing wrong with that.

In the real world, people don't live and breathe politics. Not even the President's daughters as they said.

Don't attach freeper values to young women that age. It doesn't work and it's not a fair comparison.

We aren't normal. Everything that happens or is said, immediately gets measured here by it's political value. You can't apply all of life to that.

If you do, life is no longer worthwhile.

The girls will appeal to kids their age and the parents of kids that age. We need everyone in this party.

So, their style may not appeal to you, but it appeals to millions. Yes MILLIONS.

Besides the GOP needs to have a new updated face. That is our best hope for the future.

Imagine having young people actually thinking that it is cool to be a republican. Many things could change in this world if that happened.

As far as how the girls talk to Barbara, I have heard many examples of that kind of banter. Think back to all of Barbara's TV appearances to promote her latest book.

She talked that way about the girls. She was saying things like the girls don't think I"m hip and she told stories about how they would tease her about things.

Poppy was talking about the teasing that goes on in the Forbes magazine article in July of this year.

This article talks about the teasing that I saw on Monday when I was watching the women's event.

http://www.knoxstudio.com/shns/story.cfm?pk=GOP-TWINS-08-31-04&cat=AN

The latest book about the family had that sort of stuff in it too. The one that has Dynasty or something in the title.

Plus another one I read not long ago. Title is escaping me right now though. I borrowed the book and have since returned it. But I can track it down later if you don't believe me.

Plus, the Vogue magazine last month had a bit of the banter between the girls and their mom.

How is that for a few examples?

There is a big difference between making fun of your grandparents and teasing them.

My children love to tease their grandparents and their grandparents tease them right back.

It's all in good fun. My girls tease me the same way and I adore it when they do.

It's very loving if you have the sort of family has that kind of close loving relationship.

My family is like that. Clearly yours is more formal, but that doesn't make yours superior to mine or mine to yours.

The Bush family has an active, dynamic relationship.

From what I've read, it sounds like that traces back to Prescott's wife (Dorothy, I think). Remember the stories about the family competitions all the time?

The relationship the twins have to their grandparents is a natural by product of that.

I have a different opinion of their speech. I respect your opinion, but I disagree with it.

When the girls and Laura came in and got a feel for the podium etc, the Fox person gave the background on the speeches and who vetted them.

I'm sure not many people were watching, but I was.

You say you have heard the opposite. What you are hearing is people who are assuming someone wrote it and I have watched that spread, but the Fox person had interviewed Karen before hand about it.

At least that's what they said. It was emphasized that they wrote it themselves.

Sorry but I disagree and if they aren't aristocracy then tell me what is? The come from a family of Presidents and Governers and the Bush family is very well off.

Hell, my parents taught me better manners when I was half their age. It's called RESPECT.

What do the Kerry children have to do with this? And if that's the standard someone has to beat then you don't demand much from people, do you?

Yes, they are physically attractive and COULD have given a wonderful impression - but DIDN'T.

Perhaps. They did embarrass me and did receive far more negative responses than positive. Wouldn't positive, for a national audience, be better?

I think we see the responses differently. I don't see that there were more negative than positive responses.

I spent a good bit of time on this thread and the positives were right up there.

So far, I haven't heard much on the news or even in the articles that is really negative. It's just like here, some loved it, some hated it and most say it was okay.

It's all forgotten for most people outside of here don't you think? It seems that way to me.

Arnold (rightly so) has captured everyone's attention.

Thank you. Despite what I thought was a poor script, I still think they came across more positively than negatively, and I don't quite understand the uproar, especially to the point where the focus on them overshadowed Schwarzenegger's brilliant speech. To my mind, they are very likable and attractive young women.

Well let's just say there are mixed reviews on this one. Many people thought their little presentation was lame and inappropriate like I did and some people thought they were charming and loved it like you did.

Personally I don't want these things to be MTVized so a group of people that mostly don't vote anyway will think Republicans are cool. Maybe we can get really cool and have J-Lo or Janet Jackson at the next one.

Also, I think if this had been a Kerry daughters' presentation the opinion on FR would be unanimous that it stunk. I'm not going to go ga, ga over it just because it's the Bush Twins. I haven't thought much of them in the past and this didn't warm me up to them. They seem like pretty shallow people to me--maybe they'll grow up.

This new trend of getting the kids involved is a liberal approach--one I think the Republicans should not follow. It would be different if they were 40 years old and had done something spectacular in their own right. But they are 22 year old giggly girls with no accomplishments--they should have been onstage when the balloons came down and that's it.

You sure are negative. I read your profile page and see that you have two little boys.

I expect when those boys become young men, you will see the charm in kids that age.

Fred Barnes was right, families have no place at these conventions.

These words from you are why I brought up the Kerry girls.

I don't remember people complaining about kids in the campaign when Kerry's kids were there. Not from any source.

The girls have made it clear that they love their dad and they want to help. They are trying to do that.

You sure are negative.

I prefer to think of myself as cynical--ha, ha. Oh, well--the Republican party is supposed to be a big tent so I guess there is room for me too. I'll be the one in the back of tent with the sour look on my face.

They "won nearly everyone over"? Who's "everyone"?

As a Bush supporter, I'm hoping that either they get a much better, funnier script and some coaching on delivery or they cease campaigning altogether. Preferrably the latter.

Well, Fred Barnes said it best when he said he hoped this would end the practice of letting wives and children get on stage at conventions as speakers. I'm afraid if these two 22 yr. old university graduates aren't more articulate, we will be treated to some 10 and 12 yr. olds at some future convention...though on second thought, they probably wouldn't perform much differently than the twins did last night.

I am an enthusiastic Bush supporter but I was a little disappointed with the twins performance. I realize they are only 22 years old and I agree with everyone here that they are as cute as buttons but they did come across a little too shallow. I am not saying they came off worse than most 22 year olds would have but that is the problem here. They are different and they have had advantages that most 22 year olds never enjoyed.

Think about this: Right now the United States is at War. There are many 22 year olds hunting down and killing terrorist, risking their lives and getting blown to bits. They are not shallow and they would probably not come across as ditsy spoiled little children. There is a huge disconnect between the 22 year olds fighting for our country and the privileged status of the twins. This feeds the opposition's charge that the rich, well-connected President's family and friends are out of touch with the average American and the burdens of middle class families.

I am not pointing this out to get "down" on our President or his family. I also know the twins are not as shallow as they appeared; however, their performance although very humanizing and playful and familiar (good things) just did not seem to have the right amount of gravitas for the moment. I felt there should have been a serious side to their performance. Emphasize their work with disadvantaged kids, their efforts to implement their father's aid policy in Africa, or their visits to our war wounded in hospitals. At least mention in passing some ot these things.

Given that our country is at war and many young people are paying a terrible price to secure our country's freedom and security I would suggest to Mr. Rove or whomever is in charge of these things to show case the twins in more serious roles or do not show them at all. JMHO.

Go Bush.

? Why was that an insult? What's "serious" about "MTV viewing?" I watch SouthPark sometimes, and it ain't serious..... When I say "MTV generation" I'm talking about those that would rather watch a "reality show" than a W speech. THose people are due an insult! Respect mah auth-or-i-tie!
