Liberals in Denial: New Republic Editor Gives Rudy a 'C' for his Speech
Inside Politics - CNN

Posted on 08/31/2004 1:03:18 PM PDT by governsleastgovernsbest

"Mommy, make it go away!" That kind of pull-the-blanket-over-the-head denial was just on display from the youthful editor of the liberal New Republic.

Judy Woodruff, of CNN's Inside Politics show, was interviewing three journalists about the McCain and Giuliani speeches. The theme was to look ahead to possible 2008 candidacies and to grade last night's speeches.

Peter Beinart, the New Republic editor, went first. He gave Rudy a 'C,' claiming that as a mayor he had little foreign policy experience and that it showed in his speech. He gave McCain a 'B' for showing more foreign policy expertise.

As an aside, the woman reporter from the Christian Science Monitor gave both an A- and Johan Goldberg of the National Review agreed, while saying that he perhaps gave Rudy slightly higher marks because he seemed to be speaking so directly to the candidates. Goldberg expressed shock at Beinart's grading. "I have no idea what you're talking about!"

Beinart was in full Black Knight (of Monty Python fame) mode. If Kerry & Co. don't realize they've been badly wounded, they're finished.

Susan Estrich gave it an "F". All because she hates him over his divorce several years ago, apparently.

In a sure sign that the Kerry campaign does realize that they are in deep trouble, Woodruff just interviewed a journalist about rumors that there might be a big shakeup at the top of the Kerry campaign.

Among other things, the journalist said that some Kerry supporters thought that of all sports, it was a big blunder to show Kerry on vacation this week doing his elite windsurfing thing, as opposed to something more traditionally middle-class.

I put a lot more faith in Fierro than Bienart any day.

LOL. Or perhaps croquet, in top hat and morning suit, on the lawn of his mansion.

I loved Guiliani's speech. The seriousness of 9/11 plus some humor about the President and completely skewering Kerry - but in a humorous way. He did a masterful job.

It's going to hurt the Dims really bad when their "A" Game gets trounced by the Republicans' "C" and "B" (and even worse with more "reviews") Games.

I mostly agree, but I wish he never woulda mentioned Kerry. The sound of his name brought me down immediately.

I wonder what Estrich thought of Clinton's speech, given he cheated on his wife with a young intern.
