Wolf Blitzer, during a roundtable discussion with two other guys, brought up the "Purple heart band-aid" gimmick used by some delegates at the GOP convention to ridicule Kerry. Wolf then said, "This kind of thing could backfire if it is viewed as a slam against veterans who DID earn their Purple Hearts."
I fell out of my chair and couldn't get to my computer fast enough to post this. Incredible faux pas by Blitzer.

As one who received a Purple Heart in 1969, I think I can speak for most combat veterans when I say that those of us who received our commendations legitimately know what the "Purple Heart band-aid" means. And had Wolfie served and received a Purple Heart(and please correct me if I am wrong), he would not have made such a ridiculous comment.

I didn't catch it! I think I was watching CNN at the same time, ok. I admit it, hit me with a wet noodle for watching CNN.
Not to change the subject but I was so upset at John King who roughly stated that the speeches tonite were aimed among other things to persuade people that the country is heading in the right direction and then he added, most Americans don't agree that the country is moving in the right direction. Where does he get his stats? at the same place Wolfie gets his, at the center for deceiving the public/even though WE the journalist know the truth/but let's not share it with john q public/he may misuse it and vote Republican.com

There are two kinds of Purple Heart awards, you know. One is the result of a serious bleeding wound, sometimes life-threatening, that requires medical attention, and is incurred while in an exchange of fire with an enemy force.
The other kind, it seems, is recognition for getting a boo-boo while horsing around playing navy or soldier. It is only necessary to cite the day report, and have some visible sign of injury due to an external piece of metal flying around at random. For those, the "Purple Heart band-aid" is perfectly appropriate.
Wolf Blitzer seems to have let the mask slip just a little bit.

I should be astounded that the Liberals really believe it could backfire. Yesterday, It was close to unanimous on a DU thread, giddy and giggles, that it would backfire on the Republicans.

Uh, no. He was referring to the GOP delegates who were wearing the band-aids. He said that the wearing of those band-aids could backfire on the GOP if the wearing of those band-aids is seen as a slam against veterans "who DID earn their Purple Hearts". The clear implication being that Kerry did NOT earn HIS Purple Hearts.
