SPOTTER REPORTS INDICATE 10 TO 14 INCHES OF RAIN HAVE OCCURRED FROM THE CITY OF RICHMOND INTO PORTIONS OF KING WILLIAM COUNTY...WITH WIDESPREAD AMOUNTS IN THE 4 TO 8 INCH RANGE FROM CHESTERFIELD AND CHARLES CITY COUNTIES...NORTHWARD INTO CAROLINE AND KING AND QUEEN COUNTIES. ADDITIONAL RAINFALL AMOUNTS OF 1 TO 3 INCHES! ARE POSSIBLE IN THE WARNED AREA.
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - At least three people were killed when Tropical Storm Gaston poured around a foot of rain on the Richmond area late yesterday. Chesterfield County public affairs spokesman Dave Goode says county divers recovered the body of a 29-year-old Chesterfield County woman from a submerged car just before 1 a-m today. (She is identified as Ngoc Ian Thay Huynh -- no pronouncer available.) Goode says crews rescued about 40 people from high waters overnight, including those stranded in vehicles and flooded buildings. Chesterfield County authorities have evacuated the area around a dam that holds the Falling Creek Reservoir, because Goode says water was coming over the dam. Richmond police spokeswoman Cynthia Price confirms that two people in the city died in storm waters. They died in Gillie Creek in eastern Richmond, but Price said they don't know the cause of death and NO other details were available. She ss Many roads are closed in the Richmond area because of high water. Most public schools have NOT yet opened, but some colleges and businesses are closed or opening late.

What part of the historic district? Shockoe Bottom has a lot of damage. The Capitol sits up on a hill, as do the older homes on Church Hill (St. John's Church).
Monument Avenue probably had some street flooding, but they're also uphill from the river.
Probably some trees down. Although Isabel likely got the weakest of those.
Most of this is concentrated on the rivers, creeks and roadways.

Sounds like this will go down in the books as one of the more intense floods in the cities history.
I'm guessing this may be it. We've had 32 inches of rain since June. 1/4 of that was yesterday.

TORRENTIAL RAINS IN CENTRAL VIRGINIA
Radar estimates of up to 14 inches of rain fell in the
Richmond area causing major flash flooding. The Governor
declared a state of emergency in the Richmond and Lynchburg
areas. Mandatory evacuations were ordered below the
Falling Creek Reservoir Dam in Chesterfield County as water
was overtopping the spillway.
SEVERE LOCALIZED FLOODING IN NEW YORK AND PENNSYLVANIA
States of emergency were declared in the Towns of Deer Park
and Port Jervis in Orange County, New York. Evacuations
were necessary in the West Brookville area of Sullivan
County in New York. Trailer parks in Stueben and Broome
Counties, New York were flooded. In Wyoming County,
Pennsylvania, water was up to 4 feet deep on roads in the
Tunkhannnock area; several homes were flooded.
I'm glad you're OK. My 4-year-old boy and I were watching the Weather Channel (he loves Storm Stories) last night, and when Evening Edition came on, they showed the floods around Richmond. I was immediately concerned about the Richmond coffee club FReepers. I hope none are endangered or suffer serious property loss -- there were tornadoes around, too.

TWENTY BLOCKS OF DOWNTOWN RICHMOND CONDEMNED
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - About 20 blocks of downtown Richmond have been condemned after the remnants of Tropical Storm Gaston battered central Virginia with 10-to-14 inches of rain, causing heavy flooding. Authorities have confirmed three fatalities in the region. Mayor Rudolph McCollum says a brick building collapsed in the city's historic and low-lying Shockoe Bottom area, and several dozen buildings had extensive water damage after floodwaters reached depths of up to ten feet. City officials say the damage will easily be in the (m) millionsof dollars but say it's too early to provide an estimate. Governor Mark Warner declared a state of emergency last night and planned to tour Shockoe Bottom later this morning. The declaration made state resources available and put the Virginia National Guard on standby for possible duty. At least three people died in the floodwaters. One was found in a submerged car in Chesterfield County, and two people drowned in a creek in eastern Richmond. Many roads were still closed in the Richmond area because of flood damage.

Just heard from younger daughter....she's attempting to get to her apartment now. She says roads are full of mud and debris. No classes at VCU this morning. They are supposed to open at 12:30. Glad you are ok, Corin...

My area of Denbigh in Newport News had some wet grass this morning. Love the Denbigh Shower Curtain - it keeps a lot of the bad stuff away.
Other areas of the city will get slammed. The surrounding Counties get slammed - we get a little wet. I sure hope it holds true when the next Big One hits.

We're okay. We got stuck in Atlee for a couple of hours when US 301 was flooded, but I consider myself fortunate.

Hey Corin. OK here. About an inch of water in my basement got me a little frustrated. That is until I saw what was happening to ther folks in the area. Helps to put it all into perspective. We only had a half second interruption in power last night. Hope everyone else is OK. Prayers for the folks in the Falling Creek Reservoir area.
