I met Lionel Hampton when he came to Houston to perform at a club while in town as a delegate for the GOP convention in 1992.
I saw a single on ebay one time that Lionel Hampton had recorded for Richard Nixon's campaign (I think 1968 or 1972).
Hamp accompanying himself on the vibes...
Stardust from a Hollywood Bowl concert might have been the greatest vibes solo ever. Arguably, the best jazz solo ever...
Very interesting. Thank you for posting.
It seems to me so completely ironic that the Republicans are now being noted for having finally at some point "broken the color barrier."
The Democrat Party is the absolute worst thing that has ever happened to blacks in this country. The Republicans ended slavery and the Democrats resisted federal civil rights legislation for generations. The Democrats seem to thrive now only because they are forever promoting a "plantation mentality."
I suppose that as a white man I would be considered to have no standing and I am better off keeping my mouth closed concerning such matters. The fact that I grew up in black neighborhoods and I personally lived with a minoriy standing for my formative years clearly has no bearing.
I am supposed to just shut up and be called "whitey" despite the fact that many of my long standing friends are black. It is frustrating to me that ruthless persons have hijacked the Democrat Party, and they act completely shamelessly in so many ways.
Karma is sometimes a peculiar thing to behold.

Lionel Hampton actually got associated with the "Rock and Roll" set in the 1950s. Here is a (Mexican) lobby card for the Alan Freed movie Mister Rock And Roll (note Little Richard on the right half of the card):

If you want on (or off) of my black conservative ping list, please let me know via FREEPmail. (And no, you don't have to be black to be on the list!)
Extra warning: this is a high-volume ping list.
Be Bop Ping...
Thanks for the posting. I did not know anything about Hampton's support for the GOP.
I am friend's with a certain former Columbia records jazz producer and musician who recently confessed that he was a Reagan Republican. (We had never talked politics in our previous years of friendship.) My reponse was: Yeah, you and Lionel Hampton.
